“N-nothing,” Raymond said, his eyes hesitant. He tugged on Celestine’s sleeve. “Mom, are you really going to send me back?”
“Raymond, there are some things we all have to face eventually,” Celestine sighed. “With your father, the Fordhams can give you a better future. Everything you want, you can have when you grow up. Your life won’t be as hard as mine.”
She couldn’t bring herself to tell him the cruel, bloody truth.
A child’s worldview is shaped at a young age.
She had raised them for all those years, and still, she was no match for Joanna.
Perhaps she really wasn’t cut out to be a mother.
Tears streamed down Raymond’s face.
But this time, he didn’t scream or throw a tantrum. He followed Celestine out of the airport in silence.
Celestine first settled Raymond in a hotel.
The schedule for this business trip was tight. When she finally found the partner company, they informed her that their collaboration had been terminated a week ago.
Celestine tried to call Violet, but her calls went unanswered.
When she reported the situation to Bagehot, the man on the phone sounded utterly shocked.
“What? They dared to breach the contract! Violet was in charge of that company. Have you been able to reach her?”
“No.”
“Celly, just wait there. I’ll contact our person on that end to figure out what happened. I’ll get back to you as soon as I have an answer.”
After hanging up with Bagehot, Celestine felt an uneasy feeling, as if a knife were hanging over her.
Although there was nothing wrong with Bagehot’s performance, she had the absurd feeling that she’d been played.
She waited another day, but there was still no news.
Celestine decided to take Raymond back to his family first.
