His age was the one thing Silas was deeply, agonizingly insecure about. The mere thought that she might view him as old or lacking in stamina made him want to cough up blood out of sheer frustration.
He locked eyes with her and asked point-blank, "Do you think I'm tired because I'm older than you and my stamina is failing?"
Caught completely off guard by how accurately he read her mind, a fiery blush swept across Willow's cheeks. She immediately backpedaled. "No, no, of course not! That's not what I meant at all. Please don't misunderstand."
But Silas wasn't buying it. Her mouth was denying it, but the panic in her eyes confirmed that was exactly what she had been thinking. Otherwise, she wouldn't have brought it up in the first place.
Yet, he couldn't exactly argue with biology. A ten-year age gap was an undeniable fact, and no matter how much wealth or power he possessed, he couldn't turn back the clock. Forcing down his bitter frustration, he took a slow breath.
He couldn't change his birth year, but he could certainly prove that he made up for it in every other conceivable way.
He took a step closer, angling his head down to hold her gaze perfectly level with his. His tone was a mix of intense explanation and fierce determination. "I spend roughly four hours every single day in the gym. I wake up early for an hour of core strength conditioning, take another hour at noon for high-intensity reinforcement, and spend two hours every night doing explosive combat training. So, rest assured, my stamina is exceptional. I will never fall short in that department."
Listening to the first half of his routine, Willow felt a wave of admiration. Highly successful men truly were built differently to maintain such a grueling schedule. But his final sentence threw her for a loop. Why was he telling her to 'rest assured'? His physical stamina had absolutely nothing to do with her.
Unsure of how else to respond to such an intense declaration, she offered a stiff, awkward smile. "That's... great. That's really great."
Silas was far from satisfied with her reaction. He could hear the polite brush-off in her voice. He pressed closer. "You don't believe me, do you?"
"What? No, of course I believe you!" Willow had no idea how to navigate this conversation anymore. She simply felt it wasn't any of her business. Naturally, she hoped he stayed fit and lived a long, healthy life, but that was strictly from the perspective of a friendly colleague.
