Willow didn't read too much into it. Assuming he was talking about the woman he supposedly had a crush on, she simply nodded. "That makes sense."
They continued their stroll until they spotted two little girls playing with sparklers. The sight jogged Willow's memory. "I heard the fireworks over the bay are absolutely stunning. It's a shame we won't get to see them tonight."
"You want to see them?" Silas asked.
"Yeah." Willow kept her tone conversational, not thinking anything of the question. "I've been here a few times, but it's always either the wrong time of day or just bad timing. It's a bit of a letdown to always miss them."
Silas studied her face for a moment. "Wait here for a second. I need to make a call."
"Sure."
He stepped away and returned a few minutes later. Seeing that it was getting late, Willow asked, "Should we head back?"
Silas checked his watch. "Give it five more minutes."
He guided her toward the edge of the promenade, leaning against the railing.
Assuming he just wanted to enjoy the ocean breeze a little longer, Willow didn't press him and stood quietly by his side.
Roughly five minutes passed, she wasn't exactly counting, when a deafening boom shattered the night. A massive shower of golden sparks erupted over the water, casting a brilliant, shimmering glow across the dark waves. The vibrant fireworks danced against the backdrop of Downtown Seattle, painting the night sky in a breathtaking display of flowing colors.
Willow was utterly mesmerized.
She wasn't the only one. The surrounding crowd froze in sheer disbelief. At first, no one processed what was happening. Fireworks were strictly prohibited here, reserved exclusively for massive, city-sanctioned events. Since it wasn't a holiday and there had been no official announcements, a display like this was unheard of.
But as the explosions continued, layering the sky with silver and gold, the reality sank in. The promenade erupted into cheers and excited screams. People scrambled to pull out their phones to record the spectacle.
