Inside the room, Willow leaned heavily against the locked door. She didn't move a muscle until the faint sound of Silas's footsteps finally faded down the hall. Only then did the adrenaline crash, her knees giving out as she slid down the door to the floor.
That kiss hadn't just landed on her forehead; it had seared itself straight into her chest, leaving her entirely unsure of how to react.
On the walk back, she had felt him trying to breach the subject, but she absolutely refused to hear it. She was terrified of what he might say and had no idea how she was supposed to handle it.
If he confessed that it was a genuine slip of romantic feelings, she wouldn't believe it.
But if he chalked it up to a momentary lapse in judgment fueled by the adrenaline of the fireworks, it would shatter her in a way she didn't want to examine.
Given the miserable options, she'd rather pretend it never happened to spare them both the agonizing awkwardness.
After a shower, she checked her phone. Silas had sent her a text. The message was maddeningly simple: 'Are you asleep?'
She was wide awake, but since she had no idea what the appropriate response was to the man who had just kissed her, she ignored it.
The following morning, she finally texted back: 'Sorry, I crashed hard last night and missed this. Did you need something?'
A minute later, she sent a follow-up: 'I'm heading out this morning to meet Leo and the team.'
The moment the text delivered, her phone buzzed with an incoming call from Silas. After sending his message the night before, he had stared at his screen waiting for a reply that never came. He hadn't double-texted, terrified of waking her.
But he hadn't slept a wink. He had tossed and turned, his mind racing until exhaustion finally dragged him under around five in the morning, only for him to snap awake shortly after.
