Vivienne knew he was deliberately ignoring her. Not daring to knock again, she simply stood by the door, leaning heavily on her crutch.

She assumed he was just angry in the moment and would cool off after a few minutes. But to her dismay, twenty minutes dragged by with absolute silence from the study. Her patience was wearing razor-thin.

When she thought back to the freezing look he had given her upon arriving home, the reality of the situation became even harder to swallow.

Once upon a time, he had looked at Willow with those exact same eyes. Back then, it had filled Vivienne with a sick thrill; the colder he was to his wife, the happier Vivienne felt. She never imagined that one day, that freezing gaze would be turned on her.

She always knew Julian was ruthless. If he wasn't, he wouldn't have completely neglected Willow for three years, squeezing every last drop of value out of her before letting her go. She just never expected him to apply that same cruelty to her.

The moment the thought crossed her mind, she forced it away. She couldn't let that happen. She couldn't bear the consequences if it did. She had gambled absolutely everything to win Julian, and she absolutely refused to lose.

Making up her mind, she hobbled downstairs and grabbed Toby right in the middle of him playing with his toys. "Go upstairs and tell Daddy to come down for dinner."

Toby was annoyed at the interruption and instantly prepared to throw a tantrum.

Vivienne cut him off before he could start screaming. "Toby, do you remember what you promised earlier? Didn't you say you'd protect Mommy? It hasn't even been that long, and you've already forgotten?"

Kids were easy to manipulate, especially a simple-minded one like Toby. The challenge instantly flared his temper. "Of course I remember! I just have to go get Daddy for dinner, right? I'll do it right now!"
