Taking a breath, Willow laid it out. "You told him you hated him. You said he was the most annoying man alive and that you were never going to buy him dinner again."
Jade sat frozen, staring into space. It was over. Her life was officially over.
She had been terrified she might have drunkenly confessed her love, but honestly, that would have been better than this. At least a love confession could be brushed off as drunk affection. Telling someone they were the bane of your existence was just insulting. Any idiot knew which one was worse.
"How did he react?" Jade asked frantically.
Willow thought back. "He seemed fine. He didn't look particularly angry. He probably just chalked it up to you being wasted and decided to let it slide."
Hugo might have let it slide when she was black-out drunk, but a sober Jade was a different story. The thought of facing him at the office sent a fresh wave of panic through her. "Willow, what am I going to do?"
Willow felt a surge of sympathy. "Do you want me to call him and test the waters?"
"No, forget it." Despite her panic, Jade's mind was clear. Even if Willow called him now, she still had to face him in person at the office later.
There was no hiding from this.
She had originally come to Willow's place for emotional support, and now that she had processed the sheer horror of the situation, it was time to get moving. She got up to wash her face and get ready.
While Jade was getting ready, Willow threw together a quick breakfast for her. That was just who Willow was—she supported her friends' decisions unconditionally and helped however she could without overstepping boundaries.
The entire commute to work, Jade was mentally preparing herself, rehearsing her apology over and over in her head. She even caught herself praying that Hugo would magically be out of the office today, sparing them both the awkwardness.
But the moment she walked through the doors, she saw him sitting in his office. Not only was he there, but he actively greeted her and told her to come to his office in a bit.
A cold sweat broke out across Jade's back.
