Willow dialed Jade’s number. Since she was staying at Jade’s place, it wouldn't be right to invite Silas inside without giving her a heads-up.
Jade was ecstatic. She would have had reservations if it were anyone else, but this was Silas. She’d been praying for Willow and Silas to get together. A quick visit was more than fine with her.
Willow hung up and turned to Silas. "All set. Let's go up."
She reached for the heavy grocery bags in his hands, but he smoothly sidestepped her. "Your roommate agreed?" Silas asked, his tone dropping a fraction of a degree.
Willow assumed he knew she was staying with Jade, perhaps from a passing comment she’d made earlier. "Yeah, she was fine with it."
Yet, Silas’s demeanor seemed a bit colder than a moment ago. Willow brushed it off, figuring the bags were just heavy.
At the apartment door, she asked him to wait while she grabbed some slippers. A moment later, she returned with an apologetic smile, handing him a flimsy pair of disposable hotel slippers. "I'm so sorry, we don't have any men's slippers. Can you make do with these?"
"It's fine," Silas said, stepping inside. He didn't mind the footwear, but his analytical mind was already spinning. Not a single pair of men's slippers in the house? Even if she wasn't living with Julian, surely she’d have something. And the way she had spoken on the phone just now—it hadn't sounded like she was talking to a distant landlord or a stranger.
