She knew, without a shadow of a doubt, that none of this would be possible without Silas. Regardless of what his true feelings for her were, he had been her steadfast protector. That was an undeniable fact.
"Where did you go just now?" Silas asked, noticing her staring out the window, lost in thought.
"I was just trying to figure out how to properly thank you," Willow answered honestly.
Silas let out a low chuckle. "Just for helping you move?"
"For today, yes. But for everything else, too," she said. "For helping me at work. For saving my mother at the hospital."
Silas didn't like it when she kept score. When he did things for her, he never viewed it as a favor. It was instinct. He didn't want her gratitude.
But since she was so determined, he decided to indulge her. "Have you come up with a plan yet?"
"No," Willow sighed. "You have everything. A standard 'thank you' dinner feels cheap, and I definitely can't afford the kind of luxury gifts you're used to."
"Maybe you should focus on what I actually like," Silas suggested smoothly.
"What do you like?" Willow tilted her head, studying him. "You always seem so detached. Like nothing really phases you."
It was true. Because Silas could buy anything the world had to offer, he radiated an effortless, untouchable calm.
"I'm human. I desire things just like anyone else," Silas said, turning his head slightly to lock eyes with her, his gaze intense and warm. "You just haven't figured out what it is yet."
"Can you just tell me?"
"No," Silas smiled, turning back to the road. "That's something you have to discover on your own."
"That could take me forever."
