Julian bought her story a little more. "Did he make any demands?"
Heavyweights of his caliber usually had basic salary expectations but came with a laundry list of eccentric personal demands. Julian wasn't afraid of demands; demands meant there was room to negotiate. The worst-case scenario was when they asked for nothing at all.
"None," Vivienne replied without missing a beat. "Professor Smith said that out of affection for me, he wouldn't ask for anything extra. Even his compensation was standard; he just asked for the going market rate."
In truth, Professor Smith really hadn't asked for much—other than her help locating the elusive 'WR.' Vivienne kept her mouth shut about that, perfectly happy to hoard all the credit for herself.
"Good." Julian's expression finally softened. "When can they get here?"
"Next week."
"That fast?" Julian was caught off guard again.
Vivienne eagerly milked the moment. "He actually had prior engagements, but I knew you were stressing about finding a team. I begged him to bump up his schedule to help us out of this crisis. He's a sweetheart, so he agreed on the spot."
Vivienne always fed Julian half-truths. The real reason she had convinced Professor Smith to rush his flight was by promising him that arriving sooner meant they could start the hunt for the mystery person that much faster. She knew Smith well; outside of his academic obsessions, he had few interests and was notoriously oblivious when it came to reading people. She had preyed on that exact vulnerability to trick him into rushing to the States.
