"Can I?" Silas Thorne hadn't expected the offer. He hadn't even dared to hope for it.
"Of course." Willow found his reaction strange. It was just a fruit salad. "As long as you don't mind."
"I don't. I'd love to."
Once inside, Willow unpacked the hot dishes Silas had brought and arranged them on the dining table, then went to the fridge to grab the fruit medley she had prepared. She wasn't a master chef, so she usually stuck to simple, foolproof things. Thankfully, presentation mattered more than technique here.
Colorful chunks of fresh fruit were piled high in a glass bowl. The sweet, crisp scent filled the air, perfectly complemented by a drizzle of rich, tart yogurt. It looked vibrant, refreshing, and incredibly appetizing.
Willow scooped a generous portion into a small bowl and handed it to him. "If you don't like it, don't force yourself. You can leave it."
Silas didn't even entertain the thought of leaving a single bite. After fighting so hard just to be in the same room as her, his only fear was that she wouldn't let him have enough.
They sat across from each other in silence. She ate the dinner he had cooked; he ate the fruit she had prepared. Neither spoke.
Even though nothing overt was said, the atmosphere was a far cry from the effortless comfort they used to share. It felt as though an invisible glass wall had been erected right down the center of the table.
Eventually, Silas broke the silence, asking how her meeting with Mr. Smith went.
In reality, it had been a total disaster, but Willow wasn't ready to share that yet. For one, she still had no idea why Mr. Smith had treated them with such visceral hostility. For another, Silas was clearly exhausted. Ever since he got back from his trip, the dark circles under his eyes had deepened, and he was working later and later. She absolutely refused to dump her professional drama on him right now.
"It was fine," Willow lied smoothly. But Silas's question sparked a sudden thought. Mr. Smith had said they were 'famous.'
Willow knew for a fact that she and Leo Yardley weren't famous in academic circles. Was it possible he recognized them because of Merit Biotech's reputation?
