She could give him more, of course, but Willow found it absurd. She knew her own limits in the kitchen. "Are you just starving, or are your taste buds broken? Or are you forcing yourself to eat a second bowl just to protect my ego?"
"None of the above," Silas replied with total sincerity. "I genuinely think it's delicious."
Willow was speechless.
This time, she gave him a slightly smaller portion. And, just to ensure he didn't feel obligated to sit there and eat just to keep her company, she deliberately put her chopsticks down before he finished.
They hadn't spoken much all evening, and once the meal was over, the silence settled in again. Silas took the hint and stood up to leave. But before heading for the door, his eyes lingered on the remaining fruit salad in the serving bowl. "Can I pack the rest of this to go?"
Willow stared at him. "Are you serious?"
She was honestly starting to question reality. Was she secretly a culinary prodigy and just hadn't realized it until tonight?
She felt like she was in the twilight zone, but looking into Silas's earnest, expectant eyes, she couldn't find the heart to say no. She figured she was just overthinking it. Resigned, she grabbed a container and packed up the leftovers for him.
As she handed him the bag at the door, she gave him a strict warning. "If you can't finish it, throw it away. It won't keep until tomorrow."
"Don't worry," Silas promised. "I'll finish every bite."
