The heavy rain battered the leaves in the yard. It wasn't until Vivienne and her crew completely disappeared down the mountain trail that the isolated property finally returned to a heavy silence.
Sarah gently took Ethan's cold wrist. With eyes brimming with unbearable heartache, she led him back inside the house. She softly rubbed his shoulders, murmuring endless words of comfort. Only when the sheer terror in the boy's eyes began to fade did she quietly step back out into the yard.
She looked at her husband, whose face was still a mask of fury, his chest heaving heavily. Sarah let out a long, exhausted sigh, her voice laced with helplessness. "You were too reckless just now. That woman is clearly rich and powerful. We can't afford to make enemies like that."
Garrett snapped his head away, his expression entirely unrepentant and fiercely stubborn. His fists were clenched tight at his sides. The moment he recalled the sheer revulsion in that woman's eyes when she looked at his son, his rage reignited. "Reckless or not, I will never regret it! Did you see the way she looked at him? She looked at Ethan like he was some kind of monster! Does my son deserve to be treated like garbage just because he was born?"
Sarah stared out at the dark, stormy sky, a deep bitterness swallowing her gaze. "It's been so many years. Aren't you used to it by now? We left the village and moved out here in the middle of nowhere just to escape those disgusted stares. We just want him to grow up in peace."
"Ethan is sick. That is a fact we can't change. You can't keep fighting the whole world. Your health is more important."
Remembering the cruelty of the strangers, her heart bled just as much as his. But they had no power. Since they couldn't change reality, they could only endure it. After so many years, she had numbly accepted their fate.
Hearing her words, Garrett's rigid posture slumped slightly, but his eyes remained fiercely determined. "I don't care what they think. My boy hasn't done anything wrong. He is a good kid, not the freak they see him as."
