Three Years Forgotten, Why Go Crazy When I Say Goodbye? novel Chapter 446

"What are you implying?" Vivienne snapped, turning her hostility on him.

"It's just the reality of the situation," Mayor Henderson sighed. Truthfully, he was exhausted. He had been dragged through the mud with her over the past few days and was sick of it. Plus, after meeting Willow's team, his patience for Vivienne's arrogant entourage had worn razor-thin. He just wanted to resolve this and get them out of his hair.

He laid out his bottom line. "This is the best I can do. If you're not satisfied, you're welcome to negotiate with them yourself."

"You think I won't?" Vivienne shot back, but a jolt of fear spiked through her as she recalled her last two visits. Her dog bites were still throbbing.

Watching their back-and-forth without a patient in sight, Mr. Smith grew impatient. But as a foreigner, he couldn't keep up with Vivienne's rapid-fire speech and the heavy Appalachian accent. He had no idea what was being said.

"So, what's going on? Are we seeing the boy today?" he asked Vivienne.

Cornered, Vivienne couldn't hide the delay anymore, though she still spun the truth. "Not today, I'm afraid. He's not home. We'll have to wait a little longer."

But Mr. Smith wasn't stupid. Remembering Willow's presence yesterday, he pressed, "Are they refusing our interview because they want to go with Willow's team?"

This was a common hazard in field research—competing teams fighting over the same subject, leaving the final decision entirely up to the interviewee.

Vivienne hadn't expected him to connect the dots so quickly. She quickly backpedaled. "They do want to compare their options, but don't worry. It's just a formality. Our odds are practically guaranteed."
