The rain only fell harder.
Thick black clouds pressed down on the mountains. Gale-force winds whipped dense sheets of rain, slamming against the roof tiles, windows, and surrounding woods of Mayor Henderson's residence with a deafening rumble.
The wind howled through the valley, the storm raging as the world turned dark and suffocating. The muddy mountain roads were completely soaked, and the entire forest was deathly empty, leaving only the massive roar of the storm.
Inside, although somewhat shielded from the weather, the room felt stiflingly hot and unusually oppressive, the stagnant air making it hard to breathe.
At this moment, Willow lay quietly on the bed, covered by a blanket. Her posture was peaceful, yet she was clearly not in a normal state of sleep.
Her eyes were tightly shut, dark lashes resting on her pale, exhausted face. Her lips were colorless, and the rise and fall of her chest was frighteningly shallow.
It wasn't a deep slumber; she had slipped into a coma-like unconsciousness due to the chemical incapacitation.
In truth, it wasn't just Willow. Leo Yardley and the other Merit Biotech colleagues were all in the exact same state.
Across the beds, everyone lay in eerie silence, not a single one awake. Some were turned on their sides, others flat on their backs, but all breathed shallowly, their bodies unnaturally still and rigid. Against the chaotic roar of the storm outside, the silence in the room was terrifyingly obvious.
Soon after, the door was pushed open from the outside.
A few figures slipped into the room, using the dark, rainy night as cover. They ducked their heads, moving with practiced stealth. It was the same group of idle thugs they had encountered during the day.
