Julian was clearly surprised to see her. "Why aren't you at home resting at this hour? What are you doing out here all by yourself?"

Vivienne had absolutely not expected to run into him here, especially not right after what had just happened. Terrified that he might figure out the truth, she forced a casual tone and replied, "It's nothing. I just came out to meet a friend and go for a walk."

"Meet a friend?" Julian raised an eyebrow, his sharp gaze locking onto her evasive eyes. He clearly didn't buy her excuse. "Which friend?"

The panic in Vivienne's chest intensified, and a thin layer of cold sweat began to form on her back. She feigned composure, keeping her voice as breezy as possible. "Just a friend I met recently. You don't know them. We just chatted for a bit, that's all."

As soon as she finished speaking, Julian pressed further. "It wasn't Jay, was it? I saw him around here earlier."

He had been in the area meeting a client, so he had been around for a while. He had indeed spotted Jay nearby just a short time ago.

Julian's voice was calm, but his words carried a piercing intensity that slammed into Vivienne's chest, making her scalp tingle and her heart skip a beat.

In that terrifying split second, she felt like she was suffocating.
