Professor Smith didn't answer right away.
The only sound in the room was the steady, rhythmic beeping of the equipment. After a long moment, he slowly shook his head. His voice was steady and absolute, laced with extreme caution. "It's wrong."
He turned around, his gaze heavy with conflict and doubt. "The data checks out. The methodology is sound. She even shares a lot of WH's core research habits. But my gut tells me she isn't her."
Smith pointed a finger at the readouts on the screen, his tone deepening as he broke it down. "The real WH is calm, reserved, and grounded. She is meticulously rigorous. She doesn't speak much, but she thinks deeply. She approaches everyone with a pure, detached professional distance. Her eyes are only on the research. There is no room for vanity or ambition."
"But this Vivienne Sinclair," he paused, recalling Vivienne's speech, her expressions, and the look in her eyes during the summit. "Her technique might be real. Her talent might be real. But she's too eager."
"The way she speaks, her attitude, the raw hunger and calculation in her eyes—it's completely at odds with the WH in my memory. The real WH is devoted to the science, untainted by the secular world. They are two entirely different people."
The assistant blinked in surprise and quickly pressed, "Could her mindset and personality have just changed over the years? People change."
Smith shook his head again, his doubts only growing stronger, though his voice remained firm. "When someone is that deeply entrenched in top-tier research, their foundational ethos and scientific integrity are carved into their bones. They don't just disappear. She might have WH's skills, but she doesn't have WH's soul."
"So, this isn't as simple as it looks."
The assistant didn't entirely understand the professor's absolute certainty, but he had worked for Smith for years and trusted his judgment implicitly. Even if he couldn't see the full picture, he didn't question it. He knew Smith never made a claim without good reason.
