Willow didn't take Julian's desperate rant to heart, but Silas certainly did.
Ever since they left the building, his expression had remained heavy. His brows were knit together in an undeniable display of inner turmoil.
As they walked slowly down the street, Willow held his arm. Her fingertips brushed against the rigid tension in his muscles, causing her heart to skip a beat. She looked up at the tall, distinguished man beside her, her eyes laced with concern. "What's wrong? You haven't said a word since we walked out. Did I do something to upset you?"
Silas lowered his gaze, forcing back the churning anxiety in his eyes. He shed his cold exterior, replacing it with an achingly deep tenderness. Leaning down slightly, he kissed her forehead, trying to soothe her. "I'm fine. Don't overthink it."
He intended to swallow those toxic emotions on his own, refusing to let them taint her peace.
But Willow had her own stubborn streak. "I can tell you're upset. Just tell me why, please? If you don't say anything, I'm just going to keep worrying."
Hearing her plea chipped away at his resolve. The last thing he ever wanted was to cause her distress.
Sighing, he pulled her into his embrace, his palm resting softly against the small of her back. His voice was low, carrying a faint, almost imperceptible trace of fear. "I am bothered by what Julian said. He claimed that sooner or later, I'd weigh the pros and cons and discard you."
Willow rested against his warm, solid chest, listening to his steady but slightly accelerated heartbeat. Her expression softened, and she asked quietly, "Is that what you're worried about? Well, would you do that?"
"Never," Silas answered without a second of hesitation, his voice firm and grave. "I've spent almost half my life waiting for you. I fought with everything I have to keep you by my side. In this life, and the next, I will never let go. I could never abandon you."
Afraid she wouldn't believe him, he framed her beautifully natural face with his hands, his dark eyes locking onto hers. "I swear it. For the rest of my life, I will only ever love you. If I break this vow—"
"Don't say that," Willow interrupted, gently pressing her fingers against his lips. A soft, warm light bloomed in her eyes. "I believe you."
