Clara was rendered speechless.
His words struck a deep chord within her.
But today was different...
"Yes, I understand, Mr. Jarrett," Clara looked at him, murmuring softly in agreement. "I'm only having a little today. I won't drink anymore after this."
I won't drink anymore after this...
Dominic dissected the meaning behind that phrase, his heart hammering uncontrollably in his chest.
On the surface, however, he maintained his cool composure. He picked up his glass and took a sip, his Adam's apple bobbing. "Good."
Unaware of his internal turmoil, Clara sat quietly beside him, looking incredibly well-behaved.
Suddenly, another wave of discomfort hit her stomach.
She frowned in pain, pressing her hand against her abdomen. She had managed to push through it a few times already, but this time, it clearly wasn't working.
Clara's face lost several shades of color as she involuntarily hunched forward.
Noticing something was very wrong, Dominic slammed his glass down, stood up, and closed the distance between them. Wrapping a large hand around her waist, he asked with deep concern,
"Is it your stomach again?"
Clutching her stomach, Clara looked up at him. She still wanted to endure it and take some medicine when she got home.
Dominic shot her down with an undeniable tone of absolute authority. "We're going to the hospital."
With that, he draped her discarded coat over her shoulders. Then, slipping one hand around her lower back and the other under her knees, he scooped her up into a princess carry.
His actions were dominant from start to finish.
Clara didn't even have a chance to refuse, her face flushing with embarrassment.
Not knowing where to put her hands, she pressed them against his shoulders. Feeling the stares of the surrounding crowd, she curled her fingers tightly.
"M-Mr. Jarrett, I can walk myself..."
Dominic shot her a look but remained silent.
Clara was dumbstruck, unable to utter another word.
It felt like an automatic reflex—whenever she was in front of him, she subconsciously yielded, handing the reins entirely over to him.
The moment that realization surfaced, Clara was stunned.
She hadn't even known him before this...
...
Dominic carried her out of the bar and settled her into his car.
"I'll have someone bring your Land Rover to the hospital later."
Clara hadn't expected him to be so thoroughly considerate. A strange flutter brushed past her heart.
When she was with Julian, he had never once considered all the angles for her.
The stark contrast only deepened the strange sensation in her chest.
Clara tightened her grip on her thighs.
She wasn't a little girl anymore.
