Chapter 7
Brett’s head snapped up, eyes bloodshot.
“I didn’t kill anyone! It was an accident! An ACCIDENT!”
“It was the blizzard, it was the traffic…”
“It was YOU.”
I cut him off, staring straight into his eyes.
“You’re a husband who ignored his wife’s cries for help.”
“You’re a father who chose someone else over his dying child.”
“And you’re a captain who claims to hate people abusing their power, then did exactly that for someone else.”
“You were three minutes from the highway. But you chose that concert over your wife and baby’s lives.”
Brett’s face went ghostly pale.
“I blocked Tessa… I cut her off completely.”
“Too late.”
I pulled out my phone and opened the trending page.
“Brett, you think this is over?”
Number one trending topic, exploding across the internet: #TrafficCopAbused PowerForConcertWhile PregnantWife Lost Baby
The video had over ten million views.
It was the one I’d posted-complete with the full phone call recording and the death certificate.
Public outrage was everywhere.
[This guy’s an absolute monster!]
[That pregnant woman must’ve been so desperate, while her husband told her to “deal with it” and cleared roads for his side chick!]
This is murder! Investigate him NOW!]
[And that woman posting that video bragging about special treatment-disgusting!]
Brett’s hands shook as he took my phone.
He scrolled through the endless waves of fury, saw his work badge being dragged online for everyone to see.
His hands trembled violently.
“You… you posted this?”

He stared at me in disbelief.
“Sloane, are you insane?! You’re trying to destroy me?!”
“I’m a public servant! You just ended my entire career! You destroyed this family!”
“Our family ended the moment you left me to die on that frozen highway.”
I looked at him coldly.
“Brett, all you ever cared about was your uniform and your reputation.”
“So I ripped both off for you.”
“Now you get to feel what despair really means.”
Right then, Brett’s phone started ringing frantically.
It was his chiefs custom ringtone.
Brett nearly dropped the phone in terror.
He answered, and before he could speak, his chief’s voice exploded through the line. “Brett! Look at the mess you’ve created!”
“Get back to the station RIGHT NOW for questioning! Or you’ll never wear that uniform again!”
The call ended.
Brett’s phone slipped from his hand.
It was over. Everything was over.
The investigation came faster and harder than anyone expected.
With public outrage this intense, the city formed a special task force immediately.
Abuse of power. Misuse of government property. Severe traffic violations.
Any one of those charges could destroy Brett’s career.
That video became the smoking gun.
Tessa’s cocky caption-“Sirens blazing, traffic parting”-was now the nail in his coffin.
Even more pathetic? The so-called childhood sweetheart who pushed him off the cliff was Tessa herself.
To save herself, Tessa posted a long essay online.
