Chapter 4

I knew it was coming.

But hearing Dominic admit it out loud still destroyed me.

“Why? Five whole years watching people talk shit about me, watching me suffer-and you never once stood up for me.”

He reached for my face, voice soft but cruel.

“Sophie, you know you’re the only one in my heart.”

“These five years with Vanessa-it was only because her brother saved my life. I promised him I’d take care of his family.”

“Now she’s pregnant. Once the baby’s born, it’s over.”

“Then we’ll have our own kid. Start fresh. Okay?”

I turned my head away, nausea rising in my throat.

“Just looking at you makes me sick.”

“Dominic. I want a divorce.”

His face went cold in an instant.

His eyes darkened, lips curling into a bitter smile.

“Fine. Real classy.”

“Everyone in this city knows you’re MINE. You file for divorce now, where does that leave the Blackwell name?”

“Starting today, you stay locked in here.”

“No phone. No contact with anyone. Let’s see how long your little tantrum lasts.”

He slammed out.

I collapsed on the bed, tears sliding down in silence.

The next few days, Dominic took my phone and cut off everything.

All I had was the sun rising and setting to count down.

One day left until our agreed time.

The Sterlings threw a huge party-celebrating Vanessa’s pregnancy and officially making Dominic their adopted son.

I packed what little I had.

The second 1 zipped it closed, the door exploded open.

“Dominic-what are you doing?” My heart jumped.

“Vanessa says Marcus’s jade bracelet is missing. The housekeeper saw you in her room this morning.”

“You’re trying to upset her so she’ll miscarry, aren’t you!”

His accusation froze me solid.

“What the hell are you talking about?”

But Dominic already had me by the arm, dragging me to the Sterling estate.

Vanessa’s dad Robert Sterling sat at the head of the table. Vanessa sobbed beside him.

The housekeeper pointed at me the second I walked in.

“That’s HER! I saw her coming out of Miss Sterling’s room!”

“She can’t get pregnant herself, so she got jealous and tried to hurt Miss Sterling!”

Robert’s voice boomed: “Dominic! Is this true?”

I couldn’t breathe.

“I haven’t left the house in days! I haven’t been near anyone!”

Vanessa immediately whimpered.

“Sister-in-law, if you don’t want my baby, just say it! I can give it up. Why steal my brother’s keepsake?”

Her mom Helen’s face went dark.

“Our Marcus died at twenty saving Dominic’s life. Left us with no heir. Now Vanessa’s finally pregnant and you have to ruin it?”

Robert roared: “Dominic! You owe us an explanation!”

Something flickered in Dominic’s eyes.

Then his voice went cold.

“Sophia. Hand it over.”

When I stayed silent, he picked up a wooden punishment rod.

My face drained of color. I grabbed his sleeve, voice breaking.

“A few words from them and you believe I did it?”

He stiffened. Doubt flickered-

Right then Vanessa cried out.

“Brother… It’s really heart…”

Instantly, Dominic shook me off. The rod came down hard.

“Talk!”

My heart hit rock bottom.

CRACK

The pain nearly knocked me out cold.

He didn’t even flinch-just turned Vanessa away.

“Don’t watch. Bad for our little one.”

Through the agony, I remembered that Valentine’s Day.

Fireworks over the whole city. Dominic holding my hand promising.

“If I get to spend this life with you, I’ll never betray you.”

CRACK.

The second hit.

I remembered that year a massive typhoon hit. He drove two thousand kilometers just to bring me home.

CRACK.

Third hit.

That night I had a fever. He stayed by my bed till dawn, eyes red, whispering: “When you hurt, I hurt worse.”

Again and again. Blood soaked the floor.

The heart that once burned for him shattered bit by bit.

Every guest’s eyes stabbed into me.

Pity. Mockery. Satisfaction.

The former Hart family princess-stripped of her last shred of dignity in front of the entire Manhattan’s elite..

Right before I lost consciousness, I heard my own voice-weak but clear.

“Dominic… we’re… done!”

He didn’t answer. Just signaled for the bodyguards to drag me out.

As everything faded, a familiar scent of cedar rushed close.

Then strong arms lifted me up firmly.
