Chapter 5

Dominic was a wreck the entire banquet.

By evening, he stormed out early and drove straight back to our villa.

“Sophia! You brought this on yourself!”

“Vanessa’s being gracious not pressing charges. Least you could do is apologize and return that bracelet.”

Dead silence. Nobody home.

He frowned, shoved the bedroom door open-and froze solid.

Empty.

The woman who should’ve been heartbroken, lying in bed recovering-gone.

His head buzzed.

“Sophie? Sophia?”

is voice echoed through the empty house.

girl who’d always answer him no matter how badly he hurt her?

Silent.

He tore through every room like crazy.

Found nothing but signed divorce papers on the study desk.

Dominic stood there, stunned.

His hands shook as he picked it up, his face draining of color.

He clearly remembered ripping up the divorce papers she’d held last week.

And yet-she’d quietly prepared another one, even signed them.

She really meant to leave him.

Shock twisted into rage.

“Sophia! I called you out in public ONCE and you’re throwing a fit?”

“YOU bullied Vanessa first! Can’t you just act right for once?”

“I told you-divorce isn’t a joke! Stop bringing it up! Can you give me ONE day of peace?!”

His shouting bounced off empty walls.

The silence made him angrier.

“Tine! Your attitude’s gotten real cute lately!”

“You wanna leave so bad? Go ahead! I’ll sign!”

“Let’s see where a useless woman like you ends up without me!”

He grabbed a pen and signed like he was stabbing the paper.

“Sophia! I’ll be waiting for you to come crawling back!”

He slammed the agreement on the desk and stormed out.

When he got back to the Sterlings’, the party had cleared out.

Helen saw his face and rushed over.

“Dominic, what happened? Did that bitch cause more problems? She’s exhausting!”

Dominic let out a harsh breath through his teeth.

“That ungrateful bitch actually filed for divorce over today! Now she’s disappeared!”

“I’d love to see where she goes. No money. No skills. Nothing.”

“Let her suffer out there for a while. She’ll come crawling back. Everyone knows she loves me to death.”

Helen slammed her teacup down. “Exactly!”

“Her family’s gone anyway-where can she go? Back to some trash little town?”

“She’s got no one here except you.”

Her eyes glinted with calculation.

“Let her suffer a bit. She’ll learn her lesson.”

“Today was supposed to celebrate Vanessa’s pregnancy and she had to ruin it!”

At Vanessa’s name, something flickered in Dominic’s eyes.

He clenched his fists. “I’m gonna check on Vanessa.”

Vanessa was in her room, still looking shaken.

When he told her Sophia had left divorce papers and vanished, joy flashed in her eyes before she covered it with concern.

“What? Why? Is she still mad at me?”

“This is my fault. I shouldn’t have pushed about the bracelet. Shouldn’t have made you two fight in front of everyone.”

Tears rolled down her cheeks.

Usually when Vanessa cried, Dominic would give her anything.

But right now, all he felt was irritation.

He was trying to find something comforting to say when Vanessa asked softly.

“If Sophia really doesn’t come back-Dominic, would you marry me?”

Dominic snapped his head up, staring at her in shock.

“Vanessa, what the hell are you saying!”
