Chapter 1
When I went to my fiancé Daniel Locke’s party with his friends, he said he had to step out for a bit.
But two hours passed, and he still hadn’t come back.
Just as I was about to get up and look for him, I heard his buddies talking shit about me in Italian.
“What a fucking idiot. She has no clue she’s being cheated on.”
“I bet right now Daniel and Sophia are fucking like rabbits.”
“Daniel told us Zelda’s boring as hell in bed compared to Sophia’s wild side. He and Sophia go way back, you know? Poor stupid bitch has no idea. Haha, look at her-we’re trashing her right to her face and she’s still smiling at us. Pathetic.”
I froze halfway up from my seat, my mind going completely blank.
Just then, Daniel walked through the door, sweaty and looking completely satisfied.
“Haha, so how was it? Pretty thrilling sneaking around like that? You dog!”
“Oh yeah, couldn’t get enough.”
Sophia Yates followed right behind him, casually draping her hand on Daniel’s shoulder like she always did-playing the “female buddy” card.
That’s when I noticed the hickeys covering Sophia’s neck.
I collapsed back onto the couch, devastated and hollow inside.
But his asshole friends kept pushing, asking Daniel in Italian for all the dirty details about his affair.
Daniel must have felt guilty because he instinctively pushed Sophia away when he saw me looking, then came over to sit beside me.
“Hey, why are you being so paranoid? This idiot can’t understand Italian anyway. Now if we were speaking English or French, then you’d have something to worry about!”
“With Italian though, she doesn’t have a fucking clue what we’re saying. Right guys? Hahaha!”
“You guys are evil, ganging up on Zelda like that. She’s not even from around here.”
Hearing his friends reassure him, Daniel finally relaxed.
He smiled and kissed my lips: “Don’t mind them, babe!”
“We’re all from the same place back in Italy, so we always speak Italian when we get together. It’s just habit.”
I clenched my fists so tight my nails dug into my palms. What they didn’t know was that before I moved to New York, I had spent several years living with my Italian grandmother in Tuscany-the same region they were all from.
Seeing that I stayed quiet, thinking I was fine with it, they started getting even more blunt with their questions.
“Daniel, is Sophia really better in bed than Zelda? Tell the truth, man-I’ve got money riding on this bet.”
Daniel: “Oh, absolutely. Otherwise why would I risk ignoring Zelda to go get some on the side?”

Jason: “Look at that satisfied grin on your face. You lucky bastard.”
Marco: “Fuck, this whole setup is so hot! Hahaha! Who knew speaking Italian would be this useful.”
“I’m gonna find myself a girl and try this too-talk about cheating right in front of my girlfriend’s face.”
“Look at that poor fool just sitting there listening, not understanding a damn word.”
Sophia shot me a look of contempt, then pursed her lips.
“Danny, why don’t you just marry me instead? Leave her, please?”
Daniel smiled while massaging my shoulders, then said mockingly:
“Marry you? Are you insane?”
“I know the difference between reality and fantasy. You’re just my fuck buddy-there to give me excitement and something new when I’m
bored. Basically a human sex toy. The one I actually love is my Zelda here.”
“Could you put me first in everything? Spoil me? Wait on me hand and foot like she does? Hell no. You’re way too hot-tempered. Only Zelda
does that. When I had the flu, one phone call had her flying back from Europe to take care of me.”
Hearing him bring up that memory, I felt no warmth-only rage building inside me.
He was using my love for him as a fucking bargaining chip.
All that care, all that love I gave him-and he cheated on me, then humiliated me in front of everyone.
“Shit, I forgot to make you take the morning-after pill. What if you get pregnant?”
“Damn it, why didn’t you remind me! You better go get Plan B right now.”
“Hehe, I think Zelda should be the one to buy it! If we’re gonna play games, might as well go all out.”
“You…”
Sophia picked up her wine glass and drained it, claiming she couldn’t drive after drinking.
Finally Daniel had no choice but to ask me to go.
“Babe, run to the pharmacy and grab some Plan B. We might need it tonight!”
