Chapter 2
My clenched fists were making audible cracking sounds. Not a single person in this room had any moral compass.
I’d seriously underestimated Daniel. We’d known each other for three years, and he always came across as genuine, conservative, almost
prudish.
He used to say cheating was the one thing he despised most in this world. But apparently that was all talk.
Turns out he was the biggest player of them all.
I looked up, glaring daggers at Daniel who was still laughing. Seeing my sudden change in attitude, he started to panic.
“Zelda, what… what’s wrong? Are you feeling sick?”
He reached out to touch my forehead, but his body still reeked of another woman’s saliva. Disgusted, I pulled away.
“Daniel, I think we need to postpone the wedding.”
Now he was really freaking out, grabbing my arm.
“Zelda, what’s gotten into you?”
I removed his hand and forced a bitter smile. “Don’t worry, I’m fine.”
“I just think maybe we’re rushing into marriage too fast. We’re both still young. Maybe you should enjoy yourself a bit more before we talk
about settling down.”
Daniel grinned and pulled me into a hug, burying his head in my shoulder.
“I knew you’d understand. Thank you for always looking out for me like this.”
He had no idea I was already done with him. Feeling triumphant, he looked over at Sophia and his buddies.
“Damn, what a hopelessly devoted little thing!”
“Not sure if her family would approve.”
They were all laughing at me, calling me stupid and pathetic.
I didn’t care. Let them laugh. Because anyone who wanted to make me the joke would become the punchline themselves.
I got up to buy the Plan B for Daniel. The moment I left, they were all over each other, making out.
“Fuck, playing it this big-having two women serve you at once. Only you, man.”
“Whatever, like you’re any different.”
“Alright, I’m out. My goddess is waiting for me at the hotel, all cleaned up.”
Hearing that, I quickly picked up my pace and left.
It was raining outside. The water soaked through my clothes, making me look pathetic and disheveled.

When I got back with the pills, the private room erupted in laughter.
Daniel looked at me without missing a beat and said in Italian:
“We’re going mushroom hunting tomorrow. What do you think?”
“Ugh! Don’t wanna go. Too tiring.”
“Fucking in the woods won’t be tiring though, hahaha! I’m just thinking of us!”
Sophia rubbed her foot against Daniel’s leg, and he instantly perked up.
“Perfect timing-I bought a bunch of sex toys yesterday. Originally got them for Zelda, but I think you’d appreciate them more.”
Everyone was staring at me, laughing, treating me like a complete fool.
The next day, Daniel took me out, saying we were going mushroom hunting in the mountains outside the city.
At the base of the mountain, Daniel’s buddies started cracking jokes.
“You guys are insane, having sex in the woods and bringing Zelda along. Aren’t you worried she’ll catch you?”
“As long as you don’t tell her and we don’t tell her, who’s gonna tip her off?”
“That’s what makes it so thrilling and terrifying, haha!”
Right after they said that, Daniel reluctantly started off with me to look for mushrooms.
Before long, he claimed he needed to take a piss and told me to stand guard so no one else would come by.
My heart felt like it was being torn apart and going numb at the same time. I never knew the man I loved could be this shameless.
He was carrying a backpack full of sex toys.
Last night while I was pretending to sleep, he’d quietly gotten up to pack, talking on the phone with Sophia about what positions they’d try
tomorrow.
I hadn’t slept at all. Instead, I’d been texting my boss.
I’d decided to take over the Paris branch and move to France permanently. I’d never see Daniel again.
