Chapter 7
I grabbed my suitcase and walked away without looking back, but Daniel chased after me, unwilling to give up.
He grabbed my hand: “Give me a chance! Just one more chance, please?”
How many chances had I already given him? People like this never truly change.
If I hadn’t found out, how long would he have kept lying to me?
“Go back and play with Sophia! She’s still waiting for you inside.”
I shook him off and walked away without giving him another glance.
“Zelda, don’t leave! Unless I’m dead or you marry someone else, I’ll never let you go!”
I ignored his shouting, got on the plane, and flew to France.
When I walked out of the gate, I saw my boss there to pick me up personally.
“Zelda, over here!”
I walked over, and Julian Parker gave me a hug and kissed my cheek.
I stepped back awkwardly-he’d grown up here, and this was just how people greeted each other.
Julian didn’t seem offended though. He smiled and asked:
“Everything sorted out back home?”
“Yeah, all taken care of”
“Come on, let’s go see the fireworks. There’s a show at the Eiffel Tower tonight.”
We stood under the Eiffel Tower watching the firework display, and Julian smiled as he took my arm.
I pushed him away uncomfortably: “Don’t do that. We should keep some distance.”
Julian suddenly looked at me boldly: “What if we were dating? Would that be okay then?”
His question left me speechless-I couldn’t find the words to answer.
Julian wouldn’t let me dodge the question. I’d known for a while that he had feelings for me.
But because of our different positions back then, we’d never taken things further.
“Sorry, I just got out of a really bad relationship. I’m not ready to date anyone right now. I just want to focus on work.”
“Then I’ll wait for you!” After Julian said that, he took me back to my place.
He lived next door and had already cleaned my apartment spotless-I didn’t have to lift a finger.
Watching him bustling around, cooking for me and folding my clothes…

In that moment, I froze.
A strange feeling rose from deep in my heart, like we were a loving couple who’d been together for years. The silence was beautiful and peaceful.
This kind of happiness was something I’d never experienced with Daniel.
What could Daniel do besides lie to me?
He’d almost made me lose faith in men entirely. But Julian was different-he came from a good family, was highly educated, had everything going for him. Yet here he was, completely smitten with me, pining for me for so long without any results.
He didn’t have to do this. Women were lining up to date him.
“What are you thinking about? Come eat.”
“I know you love American food, so I made a whole spread.”
Looking at the table full of delicious dishes, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t touched. Just then, Daniel called me.
Julian answered the phone.
“Zelda, where did you go? And why did you sell the house? They kicked me out and I have nowhere to go, so I’m staying at Sophia’s place temporarily.”
“Listen here, you piece of shit. Zelda broke up with you, which means you have no relationship. The house was hers-she can do whatever she wants with it.”
“I’m also amazed by your stupidity. If you want to win someone back, you should avoid any appearance of impropriety. But you’re still living with Sophia.”
“Who the hell are you? Why are you answering her phone, you little punk? Stay away from Zelda-don’t even think about stealing my girl…”
I grabbed the phone, my voice ice-cold: “Are you deaf? We broke up. You have no right to insult my boyfriend.”
I hung up and immediately blocked and deleted his number.
From then on, I threw myself into work, determined to run the branch office successfully.
If I was going to be with Julian, I needed to have a status that matched his.
I was already talented-handling big and small matters came naturally to me.
I’d wasted three years standing still for Daniel.
Just as my career was taking off, Daniel had the audacity to show up at my door.
