Samuel had already told Lawrence that Nova had been pregnant with twins, how the first one had died, and the sheer hell she had been through. Lawrence knew. Even Ian knew, sitting in his prison cell.
Hearing her words now, Lawrence froze, his eyes darting to her stomach.
It clicked. Now he understood why she was so desperate to leave the country.
His dull, lifeless eyes—eyes that had surrendered to a relentless barrage of tragedies—suddenly ignited with a fierce light.
"Okay! Okay, Dad will help you!" he nodded fiercely.
She saw the absolute, life-on-the-line devotion burning in his gaze.
"Is it a boy or a girl?"
She opened her mouth to answer, but two sharp knocks on the door interrupted them. Tristan was waiting outside.
They both clamped their mouths shut. Lawrence quickly waved her away. "Just stay put at the hospital and don't worry about me. Take care of yourself, you don't need to visit so often! I'll go see your brother in a few days and pass the news along."
Tristan walked in just in time to catch the tail end of that. "What news?"
She went completely rigid.
Lawrence smiled easily. "My daughter has ambition. She said going abroad to study is for her own self-improvement. I thought about it, and I agree with her. What do you say, Tristan?"
Faced with Lawrence's smile, Tristan wasn't nearly as genuine as he had been with Belinda. He gave a faint, polite smile. "We'll discuss it later. We haven't been married long, and I can't bear to be apart from her. Dad, you don't want me sleeping in an empty bed, do you?"
Lawrence quickly backpedaled. "Of course not. If you miss her, you can just fly over. It's only six months!"
"What can she possibly learn in six months? If she really wants to study, I can personally fly the professors from that university out here to give her private lectures." Tristan wasn't bluffing. He could make it happen with a single phone call.
If Lawrence pushed it any further, he'd have his assistants arrange it right then and there.
Backed into a corner, Lawrence forced his mouth shut.
But he was terrified that if they dragged this out, she wouldn't be able to hide the pregnancy much longer.
