To her surprise, Samuel simply hung up and blocked his number.
He did it so fast that Nova barely had time to react.
Nova asked, "Samuel, didn't you say you and Mr. Caldwell were good friends?"
Blocking and deleting someone like that was the equivalent of burning a bridge entirely.
Without even looking up, Samuel opened his phone to complain to their mentor while answering Nova, "What Mr. Caldwell? You mean Yvette's lapdog? I don't know him. We're not close."
Nova's phone buzzed. Confused, she checked the group chat for the Aro team. Professor Mathew had just sent a sixty-second voice memo.
Samuel was still typing his message, not quite finished.
They listened as Nova hit play on the voice note—
"Hickey Caldwell, if that son of yours is useless, just throw him away. Frankly, he's a lost cause. You might as well quit your research too, considering having a son like him is as good as having no son at all! I'm laughing so hard my face hurts. Your boy actually called me to tattle! He told me Samuel hired Nova and demanded I step in, fire her, and hire Yvette instead. He even had the nerve to suggest I take Yvette on as my final protégé! I just said 'uh-huh, sure, sure.' I didn't even want to waste breath on him, lest you start thinking you raised a brilliant heir. Hickey, you sure know how to make people sick. Tell your son to get lost! Let him partner with whoever the hell he wants! What a piece of work! I—"
The recording cut off abruptly. Sixty seconds was the app's limit.
A few more messages came through, all of the professor furiously cursing out Caspian and then laying into Hickey for good measure.
However, Hickey didn't reply.
He was on a remote island for the next few days, completely cut off from cellular signals to focus on his research.
Samuel deleted the text he had been typing and said, "Caspian is out of his mind. Just ignore him. I can't believe he actually ran to complain to the professor to get you fired. Looks like Yvette has been whispering in his ear. I'm honestly surprised; Yvette plays the polished elite, but apparently, she loves gossiping behind people's backs."
Nova hadn't expected Yvette to have this side to her, either.
But the topic quickly passed, and the two began discussing their strategy for the upcoming dinner meeting.
