Professor Mathew raised an eyebrow, finding the question genuinely amusing.
The things Yvette was presenting were concepts Nova had mastered in a single month during her undergraduate years under his tutelage—and Nova had executed them with far greater precision.
"You don't compare. Her abilities are the most formidable I've seen to date," Professor Mathew stated frankly.
Yvette, however, felt Professor Mathew was simply making up excuses to reject her.
She settled for the next best thing. "I don't necessarily have to be your student, Professor. I know you're not officially taking on apprentices anymore. But would it be possible to meet this Aro?"
She still refused to accept it. She wanted to see if this 'Aro' actually existed.
Professor Mathew wasn't trying to tear her down; he was just being straightforward. "She has her own students to manage. She doesn't have the bandwidth for you. Besides, there's still a noticeable gap between your skills and those of the students she's currently mentoring."
As Aro, Nova's only officially listed student was Chloe Zimmerman, who also acted as her assistant.
Originally, Professor Mathew had considered taking Chloe on as his final protégé, but fortunately, Nova returned, so he pawned the chaotic girl off on her instead.
Professor Mathew stood up to leave. Yvette sat frozen in her seat, her face pale, not even bothering to get up to see him out.
Shortly after he left, Tristan returned.
"It didn't work out?" Tristan asked.
Yvette nodded. "No. And I feel like Professor Mathew... has some sort of bias against me."
She actually wanted to tell Tristan that Nova might be sabotaging her behind the scenes, causing the Professor to treat her this way.
After all, everywhere she used to go, she was met with flowers and applause.
But she didn't say it outright, afraid Tristan would think it beneath her to petty-squabble with someone like Nova.
So she merely dropped the hint.
She was confident Tristan would understand what she meant.
"Professor Mathew spoke to me on his way out," Tristan said. "He's famously strict with his apprentices. But being rejected this time doesn't mean the door is closed forever. Keep preparing." He glanced at her still-open laptop.
Yvette couldn't help but frown.
This was a massive blow to her ego.
