"Really? What is she like? What's her name? Tell me, maybe I know her." Yvette feigned curiosity, though her grip on the blanket tightened involuntarily.
Chuck hesitated. "Let's talk about it later."
Instead, he looked directly at her. "Back when you saved me... I never asked. You don't know how to swim, so how did you end up by the ocean?"
Yvette froze for a split second before nodding smoothly. "Oh, that was purely coincidence. I just wanted to take a walk by the water, and I found you unconscious on the shore. God must have been looking out for you, washing you onto the beach just in time for me to find you."
Chuck stopped cold.
Instantly, everything made sense.
The person who had jumped into the dangerous water to save him wasn't Yvette at all—it was Nova.
Yvette had just taken the credit, letting him believe for years that she had been the one to rescue him.
"What's wrong?" Yvette noticed Chuck's strange expression.
He shook his head, keeping his face neutral. "Nothing. Just thinking how... coincidental it all is."
All the gratitude he owed Nova had been paid to Yvette, and Yvette was Nova's rival.
It was just... too coincidental.
"Well, who's to say it wasn't destiny?" Yvette blinked playfully at him. "But you're keeping this mystery girl a secret from us! You better not ditch your friends for a girl. You can't just run off with her and stop hanging out with us, okay?"
Chuck didn't take the bait. He just said, "Tristan will be here soon. I won't interrupt you guys. I'm heading out."
