A wife?
Nova felt that word was nothing short of a laughable joke when applied to her, or to their sham of a marriage.
A bitter wave of sorrow rose in her throat. Gathering her courage, she looked directly into the man's eyes and asked, "While I'm supposed to fulfill my duties as a wife, has Mr. Forrester ever fulfilled his duties as a husband?"
As her words faded, the room fell so quiet that Nova could hear her own breathing.
"You feel wronged?" the man's icy voice finally broke the silence.
Nova bit her lip, threw off the covers, and stood up from the bed. Even though she still had to look up at him, she kept her back rigidly straight.
"You married me, yet the Forrester Group released a public statement declaring that you were divorced and single. No one knows I exist. No one knows this marriage exists. No one acknowledges me. 'I'm even pregnant with your child.' Am I really so wrong for feeling aggrieved? Am I not allowed to?"
By the end of her sentence, her voice was trembling with unshed tears.
So many women enter a marriage hoping their partner will be their shelter from the storm.
But every single storm Nova had ever faced was caused by this marriage and this man.
Completely indifferent to her emotional state, the man replied flatly, "Did you not think of the consequences when you drugged me and climbed into my bed?"
Nova was genuinely left speechless.
She didn't even know what had happened that night. When she woke up, all the evidence pointed directly at her.
No matter how hard she tried to defend herself, no one believed her—least of all Tristan.
"Isn't all of this exactly what you asked for? Now you want the money and the title? Don't you think you're the one being shameless here?"
His voice wasn't loud, but it mercilessly shredded the last remaining scraps of Nova's dignity.
—After she got pregnant and married Tristan, he casually threw billions of dollars to cover the massive deficit of the Clarke family's company. He even provided elite lawyers for her father and brother, and paid for her father's astronomical medical bills...
The Forrester family had always assumed she crawled into his bed just to secure a bottomless bank account for her family. After all, women who tried that trick numbered in the dozens every year.
She was just the one who had succeeded.
Late that night, as if on cue, Nova received a call from the lawyers.
They informed her, in a strictly professional tone, that her father's case was completely resolved. Her brother's situation was a bit trickier, and he would remain in custody, but it would only take three more months to wrap up.
Normally, lawsuits of this magnitude dragged on for years. But the team Tristan dispatched had made massive breakthroughs in less than six months and were already finalizing the paperwork.
They had executed everything flawlessly, without cutting a single corner.
Nova couldn't sleep for the rest of the night.
But if she managed to return to her former position, everything would change.
"I will pay it back. I can clear the debt. Just give me some time," Nova said with unwavering determination.
She pushed an IOU across the table toward him.
Tristan didn't even spare it a glance. He stood up from the table, completely dismissing her. He didn't believe for a second that Nova could ever afford it—even if she sold herself on the streets!
"That money wasn't spent on you, nor was it for your family. It was for the child in your womb. So drop the act."
Nova flinched, Yasmin's cruel words echoing in her mind.
Rather than saying it was for the child in her womb, it was more accurate to say it was for Yvette, for the future children he would have with Yvette.
A man who could drop tens of millions on Yvette without blinking wouldn't care about a few billion...
She clenched her fists, staring at Tristan's retreating back, and boldly asked, "What is that supposed to mean?"
Tristan halted. He turned his head slightly, his gaze dropping to Nova's stomach.
"That money was used to buy out the child in your womb."
"Once this child is born, they will be a Forrester and have absolutely nothing to do with you. So, get rid of any delusions you have about securing your status through this pregnancy. From today onward, you'd better behave. The next time you try to use this baby to throw a tantrum, you'd better weigh whether you have the standing to do so."
