"After reconnecting with Yvette, you must seriously regret ever having a child with *her*." The deep voice carried a hint of a scoff and a heavy dose of resignation, as if genuinely pitying Tristan.
Tristan thought back to how Nova, even when exhausted to the point of barely keeping her eyes open, had forced herself to ask him for a loan because her father was critically ill.
She was so brazenly transactional and calculating. Few men would be able to stomach that kind of behavior in such a vulnerable moment.
He didn't deny it. His tone was casual as he admitted, "The very next day, I regretted ever touching her."
The man spoke with deadly seriousness. "If you let her safely deliver the child in her belly, you'll regret it even more. Once she has Belinda's backing, she'll use the kid as an excuse to show up constantly, making both you and Yvette miserable. Yvette is understanding and generous, but over time, it'll definitely make her uncomfortable. She'll use the child to get close to you, and even if you don't like her, she'll still target Yvette."
"If you ask me, take care of it now. It's only been a little over four months. Take her to the hospital and get rid of it. As for Belinda... if she meets Yvette and sees how outstanding she is, she might even think you made the right call."
Outside the door, Nova heard no response from Tristan.
She figured he was seriously considering the idea, weighing the pros and cons.
When the silence stretched on, Nova finally knocked and walked in.
Given her current position, her time off required Tristan's direct approval.
She calmly stated her request and the reasons for it, then handed the leave application across his desk.
Throughout the interaction, she didn't cast a single glance at the other man in the office. Once done, she turned and walked right back out.
She didn't even wait to take the approved form.
As she left, her footsteps were erratic and rushed.
The office was quiet for a moment before the man spoke again. "Kieran was right. She truly acts like a petty tyrant high on her own supply. Are you actually going to approve that?"
"I'll do everything in my power to build those bridges for her. Not just for our friendship, but because she's the woman you love. More importantly, when I fell into the ocean years ago, she saved me. She almost drowned herself. She's my savior, so her business is my business!"
With that, he picked up Nova's leave application from the desk.
...
Upon returning to her cubicle, Nova received a message from her father. He insisted he had to see her today, no matter what.
Ever since Lawrence Clarke had been transferred to the Forrester Wellness Retreat, Nova had been too consumed by the family's legal battles to visit him. She immediately agreed and began packing her things to head over.
She had already made up her mind. Whether Tristan approved her leave or not, she was packing her bags and walking out today.
If she kept dragging this out, the prospect of divorce aside, her own career would remain stalled. The debts she supposedly owed Tristan would never be fully repaid, leaving her eternally tethered to him.
