Lorelai's cold and merciless expression struck Zachary straight in the chest.
He didn't move, so she forcefully wrenched her arm free, her voice sharp enough to cut. "Mr. Wright, if you don't keep your hands to yourself, I'll be calling the police."
Lorelai didn't want to waste any more time speaking to him.
When she turned to leave, Zachary reached out to stop her. Before his hand could touch her, she swung around and slapped him. The force snapped his head to the side.
Yet, Zachary wasn't angry. He spoke calmly. "Did that help? If not, hit me again."
Seizing her hand, he slapped it against his face with a jarring impact. "It was all my fault, so punish me however you want. I won't say a word. But, Lynette, please don't walk away from me."
Lorelai stepped back. "Mr. Wright, my name is Lorelai Hall. Lynette is already dead, murdered by you and Charmaine with your bare hands. When I left Whistletown, I told myself that if we ever met again, we would be enemies.
"Zachary, you drove my father to his death. What right do you have to talk to me about love? Do you even have a heart?"
Zachary couldn't say a word.
William was the chasm between them. From the moment the man took his own life, there was no turning back to how it was before.
After a long pause, Zachary lowered his eyes. "I'm sorry."
However, Lorelai wasn't buying it. "What is apologizing supposed to do? Will it bring my father back? From the day I left you, I swore to myself that I would never let you or Charmaine off. She'll pay what she deserves. And you? I'll make sure you lose everything."
Her words cut through him like a blade. He had thought this reunion might be a chance to mend what was broken. Instead, it was a reckoning.
