Even after accepting the invitation, Zachary couldn't shake the sense that something was terribly wrong. Yet he knew that if he didn't show up, there would be no future left between them at all.
The following evening, he arrived as promised, but Lorelai was nowhere to be seen. It wasn't until the exhibition was about to begin that she finally appeared, walking in with Philip. They looked like a match made in heaven, elegant and effortless, as though they belonged together by design.
Only then did Zachary understand how much pain Lorelai must have endured every time she saw him standing beside Charmaine in the past.
The media swarmed the pair instantly.
"Ms. Hall, you've never responded to the rumors about you and Mr. Wright. Is that because of Mr. Langford?"
"Ms. Hall, Mr. Langford remained unmarried for years. Rumor has it that there's someone he's always carried in his heart. Is that person you?"
"Ms. Hall, Mr. Wright is also here tonight. Did you invite him personally?"
The questions came fast and sharp. Lorelai answered every one of them.
"First of all, I didn't respond to the rumors because there was no need to. Mr. Wright is my ex-husband; more importantly, he is the man responsible for my father's death. As for whether Mr. Langford has someone in his heart, that's a question I'm not at liberty to answer. And yes, Mr. Wright is here tonight because I invited him. There are matters between us that need to be settled."
Every spotlight locked onto the two of them. There was no warmth in Lorelai's expression; it was icy. Behind her, the massive screen lit up, unveiling the truth that had been buried for years. Her father had been framed, every piece orchestrated by Charmaine.
"Zachary, you were my father's legal counsel. Yet, at the critical moment, you turned against him. You violated your professional ethics. As an attorney, you failed to verify the so-called evidence Charmaine presented. You chose blind trust over due diligence, and that directly led to my father being imprisoned for a crime he never committed.
