Seeing Zachary stubbornly refusing to budge, Ethan tried advising him again, speaking patiently and earnestly. "Mr. Wright, Mrs. Wright… Wait… That's not right anymore. Ms. Hall has already made it clear to you. There is no future between the two of you. Holding on like this, refusing to let go, isn't good for anyone. Sometimes love doesn't mean staying together. Sometimes letting go is its own kind of love."
These principles were easier said than done.
Zachary had made up his mind. "I'm not going back until I make Nettie forgive me. If you're worried about the board holding you accountable, you can go back on your own. As for Charmaine, I spared her life out of mercy. Since she insists on causing trouble, contact our men back home. Kill her when they find her."
If it weren't for Charmaine, he and Lynette would have never reached this point.
Ethan sucked in a sharp breath, then went to carry out his orders.
…
Meanwhile, Philip drove Lorelai home. At the entrance of her building, she offered, "You've got a few scrapes on your face. Come upstairs. I'll tend to your wounds."
Warmth spread through Philip's chest instantly. He even thought that getting beaten up all over again would have been worth it.
Inside the apartment, Lorelai dabbed iodine onto his wounds. "Don't ever act on impulse again. Thankfully, nothing serious happened today, but what if it did? How am I supposed to explain this to your parents? They only have you. They would be devastated if anything were to happen to you."
Because she had lived through that kind of pain herself, she was extremely careful.
From the moment they stepped in, her words were laced with concern and soft reprimand. She herself might not recognize it yet, but Philip had quietly become irreplaceable in her life.
Listening to her, Philip smiled. "Okay, I'll listen to you. I won't lose my temper so easily anymore."
Then, he asked, "Lorelai, it's been six months. Have you figured out how you feel?"
