On the way to Tristan’s engagement party, Brandon handed Brianna a brocade box.
Brianna, lost in her own thoughts, glanced at him blankly. “What’s this?”
He pursed his lips and said. “It’s Tristan’s engagement gift. Have a look.”
Brianna took it numbly, opened the box, and saw a rolled–up painting or calligraphy scroll inside.
Not in the mood to look, she closed the box again.
The Levy family had plenty of antiques, so Brianna figured Brandon just grabbed one off the shelf. With his style, he’d never hand over anything less than the best.
She had nothing to worry about.
Normally, she should be over the moon for Tristan’s engagement, but for some reason, it felt like there was a heavy stone pressing down on her heart. She just couldn’t shake off the heaviness inside.
Brandon noticed how troubled she looked and finally asked, “What’s on your mind?”
“Nothing,” she replied, not really wanting to talk about it.
Brandon glanced at her, frowning. ‘Is she upset about Tristan getting married?‘
A wave of jealousy washed over him, and he started making small talk just to fill the silence. “I heard Tristan and his girlfriend hooked up after drinking, too.”
“Yeah! The same day you were hooking up with Darcy,” Brianna shot back.
Brandon was just trying to reminisce about how their romance first began. But Brianna didn’t get the hint at all and went straight for his sore spot.
He couldn’t hide his awkwardness, his face falling. Not ready to let it go, he kept digging for conversation.
“Rumor has it Tristan isn’t too happy about this marriage,” he said.
“Yeah! Just like you were when you married me,” Brianna shot back.
Brandon frowned at her. ‘Did she wake up on the wrong side of the bed today? Why is she so snappy?‘
He looked awkward, feeling a strange bitterness he couldn’t quite put into words.
After all these years, he’d never had to put up with this kind of attitude from her. The more Brianna ignored him, the more Brandon felt the urge to please her.
He tried again, “So, how’s that plot in Valmere going?”
Maybe talking about something she actually cares about will get her to open up, Brandon thought.

“Same as usual,” Brianna said, not interested in chatting. She cut him off with just those words.
Brandon felt even more like he was losing face.

He glanced up, awkwardly meeting the driver’s eyes in the rearview mirror. The driver’s look made Brandon feel downright pathetic, like a total loser in that moment.
He cleared his throat awkwardly. He pretended to be interested in the scenery outside the window, staying silent.
Arriving at the Delight Hotel, they found the venue already filling up with guests. The place was bustling, with plenty of people already present.
After saying hello to the crowd, they noticed Gabrielle and Kendra had already arrived.
As they approached, Kendra got super excited when she spotted her parents. “Mommy, Daddy!”
Brianna took Kendra’s hand and said hello to Gabrielle, “Mom, when did you guys get here?”
Gabrielle just gave a perfunctory response, but Brianna’s mind was elsewhere, worried about Tristan. She gently nudged Kendra toward Gabrielle.
“Kendra, be a good girl and hang out with Grandma for a bit. Mommy needs to see if anyone needs help,” Brianna said.
Kendra stuck out her lip, whining, “No, I want Mommy to stay with me.”
“Once Mommy’s done, I’ll come right back to you.” Brianna turned and left. She’d already spotted Patsy and Tristan, and quickly went after them.
Brandon instantly became the center of attention as soon as he walked in. After saying to his mother, everyone wanted a piece of him, hoping to cozy up to the big shot.
He went through the motions, but kept shooting glances at Brianna from the corner of his eye. When he saw her ditch their daughter to chase after Tristan, he felt a surge of annoyance.
Meanwhile, Patsy and Tristan were standing together, talking about something. Tristan looked totally miserable, not a hint of happiness on his face.
Brianna walked over. “Congrats, Tristan.”
But even as she said it, her voice didn’t sound the least bit happy.
“Ugh, don’t even bring it up. When did you get here?” Tristan asked. His eyes lit up for a moment when he saw Brianna, but the spark faded just as quickly.
Patsy spotted her and joked, “Perfect timing! Tristan’s dad was worried he’d make a run for it, so he had me keeping an eye on him.”
“Run for it?” Brianna looked at him, worried. With so many people around, she couldn’t really press for details.

“As if I could,” Tristan shrugged, acting nonchalant. He shot a glance at his dad nearby. “They’ve got me pinned right where it hurts.”
Brianna and Patsy shared a laugh. Seeing Tristan like that, Brianna’s worries eased up a bit.
Just then, Nancy gracefully walked over, arm in arm with her mother. She was wearing a pale pink strapless princess dress, making her look even cuter and sweeter.
When Nancy spotted Brianna standing with Tristan, her expression soured for a moment.
Nancy’s mother was the first to speak. “You must be Mrs. Levy, right? I’ve heard so much about you. Now that I see you in person, I can see you really are a beauty.”
Brianna sensed something was off, but kept it polite and reached out her hand. “Hello. I’m Brianna, Tristan’s friend.”
Nancy walked right past Brianna’s outstretched hand, brushing it aside, and went straight to Tristan, linking arms with him possessively.
Nancy’s mother didn’t bother to shake hands either, leaving Brianna’s hand hanging awkwardly in the air before she had to pull it back.
Seeing this, Patsy reached out and took Brianna’s hand.
“There’s really nothing for us to do here. You guys carry on,” she said, trying to lead Brianna away.
“Who says there’s nothing to help with?” Nancy’s mother grabbed Brianna’s arm. “The newlyweds need someone to help with the wedding toast. Carry the tray, pour the drinks and all that. Mrs. Levy, you don’t mind, do you?”
Brianna wasn’t bothered at all. She just smiled and met Nancy’s mother’s gaze. “I’m Tristan’s good friend. If he wants me to pitch in, of course I will.”
“Come on, you two are my honored guests today. Who’d dare make you carry trays?” “Tristan said with a playful grin, making a welcoming gesture. “Please, take your seats!”
Nancy and her mother looked pretty sour.
“Alright, I’ll leave you to it,” Brianna said, turning to go.
As she was about to leave, Nancy called out, “I heard you’re already married and has a kid. Did you bring your husband and child with you today. Mrs. Levy?”
“Of course,” Brianna replied, pointing to Brandon, who was surrounded by people not far away. “He’s right over there.”
