Chapter 114
Chapter 114
While driving home, Brianna’s phone rang. She glanced at the screen and saw it was the private investigator she’d hired before.
She didn’t answer right away. Instead, she pulled off the main road, found a spot to park, and then called the investigator back.

The investigator’s voice was professional, calm, and composed. “Ms. Meyers, I’ve found her. Darcy is currently in Solcrest, Aroria.”
“Oh? She’s really holed up in Solcrest?” Brianna gripped the steering wheel. “What’s going on with her? Is she by herself?”
“She’s with two friends. I also found out she’s having some conflicts with her agent,” the investigator replied.
“What’s it about?” Brianna pressed.
“Her work hiatus led to some money issues,” the investigator explained.
Brianna thought about Whitney’s illness. Her biggest concern was whether Darcy would come back. If Darcy kept staying overseas, there wasn’t much Brianna could do about her.
“Now that things have happened at home, has she bought a ticket to come back recently?” Brianna asked.
“Not yet, but I’ll keep looking into it,” the investigator replied, all business.
“Alright! Anything else?” Brianna asked.
“Well, she doesn’t really act like she’s pregnant,” the investigator said, sounding a bit hesitant. “She’s out clubbing almost every night, always drinking and smoking.”
Brianna raised an eyebrow. “So you’re saying she’s not pregnant?”
“No,” the investigator replied. “Her belly’s already showing, and she’s got records of prenatal checkups. I’m just saying she doesn’t seem to care much about the baby.”
‘Now that’s odd.‘ Brianne frowned. I’ve always thought Darcy run off while pregnant, hoping the baby would secure her a better status.
But in the third or fourth month of pregnancy, still out drinking and smoking almost every night, is she just being reckless, or does she not even want the baby?‘
After banging up, Brianna drove back to the Harper house. The whole family was waiting for her to join them for dinner.
Brianna told her family that Unity Group had snapped up the land in Valmere for an outrageous price. She also shared the news that Whitney had suffered a stroke.
“Did you go see him? Caroline asked, holding Briana’s hand.

“No,” Brianna shook her head.

There was a complicated look in Caroline’s eyes. Part relief, part happiness, and a touch of gentle reproach.
“Brianna, he’s still your father. You should make time to visit him,” her uncle said gently.
“Yeah, bring some fruit and take Kendra with you. Just go check on him, so you won’t regret it later,” Vickie added.
Brianna just kept quiet.
Caroline saw the way Brianna looked so unwilling and knew she was still holding onto her grudge.
She sighed and patted Brianna’s hand. “Alright, that’s settled. Tomorrow afternoon, you’ll go to the hospital and check on him. Good or bad, at least you’ll know for yourself.”
Their words started to make her waver. ‘Am I being too heartless?‘
But honestly, she really didn’t want to see that disgusting face ever again. Thinking about everything he’d done, he was just as cold to her as she was to him.
The conversation shifted back to Unity Group.
Her uncle shook his head in disbelief. ‘How could they get fooled so easily?‘
“They just assumed the land was zoned for residential use, not commercial?” he asked.
“Yeah, the documents they got had been forged.” Brianna replied.
Her uncle frowned tightly. Having served five years in prison before, he was deeply afraid his niece might get entangled in legal trouble.
“Brianna, seeking revenge isn’t worth risking your whole life. And remember, you’ve got Kendra. She needs you around,” he said gently.
“It’s okay, Uncle. I know what I’m doing,” Brianna said, trying to reassure him.
Her uncle’s words made her pause and think. Tristan was the one who handled all of this for her. If he ended up in trouble because of her, she’d never be at peace with herself.
After dinner, with her mind elsewhere, she sat with Caroline and watched some TV before finally heading upstairs to her room.
The first thing she did was call Brandon. She wanted to check in on Whitney and see how he was doing.
He picked up right away. “Hello?”
“Hey, have you been to the hospital to see him?” Brianna asked.
“Yeah, I went. It was a mild stroke, and they gave him the clot–busting shot in time He’s time, nothing to worry about. Brandon replied.

“Yeah, Brianna hesitated. “Grandma and the others want me to go see him.”
But honestly, she really didn’t want to.

Brandon could tell what she was thinking and tried to give her an out. “How about we take Kendra with us tomorrow afternoon? Just for appearances, so nobody makes a fuss.”
Brianna let out a soft sigh. “Alright.”
Hearing he was okay, Brianna felt a weight lift off her shoulders. All she wanted was for Unity Group to crash and for the Meyers family to get knocked down hard. She never meant to push her own father over the edge.
She could finally breathe easy.
Next, she called Tristan. The phone rang for ages, but no one picked up.
Right before she hung up, the call connected and Nancy’s voice came through.
“Hey, Brianna, is that you? Tristan’s in the shower. Is there something you need?” Nancy asked.
Brianna coughed a bit, feeling embarrassed. “Yeah, I needed to ask Tristan something. Could you have him call me back when he gets a chance?”
“It’s pretty late right now, not really convenient. I’ll tell him to call you tomorrow,” Nancy replied, her tone sharp, clearly trying to make Brianna uncomfortable.
Brianna subconsciously glanced at her watch. It was already past nine.
“Oh, I was just eager to talk to him and didn’t notice the time. Alright, I’ll call him tomorrow.” Brianna hung
Well, Tristan’s engaged now. Guess it’s time I started keeping my distance, she thought to herself.
Brianna lay in bed, flipped through a book for a bit, then tried to sleep.
No matter how hard she tried, sleep just wouldn’t come. Thoughts of Whitney, Darcy, Unity Group was piling up at once, making her mind a mess she couldn’t escape.
The next morning, Brianna showed up at the office bright and early. The moment she booted up her computer, an invitation from Clair popped up.
The charity gala was officially set.
Brianna gave Clair a call, asking if there was anything else she needed to do. Clair told her he’d already gotten Brianna’s work, so all Brianna had to do was be there for the event.
After what felt like an eternity, Brandon finally brought Kendra over that afternoon.
“Mommy Kendra burst into her mother’s office, bubbling with excitement as she threw herself into Brianna’s

Brianna had a lot weighing on her mind, so her smile was a bit forced.

“Let’s go,” Brianna said. “We’ll go see Grandpa, and then I’ll take you out for dinner.”
“Okay, I want eel rice!” Kendra said, holding her mother’s hand.
Brianna agreed, and the three of them headed downstairs together.
On the way, Kendra chattered nonstop, while Brianna just responded absentmindedly.
Brandon noticed and could tell she was anxious.
When they arrived at the hospital, Kendra rushed ahead, and Brandon came up to walk beside Brianna.
“A stroke comes from years of unhealthy living, not because you upset him. Don’t blame yourself,” Brandon said softly.
Brianna glanced up at him and forced a small smile.
They headed to the VIP ward on the top floor of the hospital.
Brandon gave the door a gentle knock. Inside the room, Blanca, Reese, and Jane were all there.
When they saw Brandon, they started to smile, but their smiles quickly disappeared when Brianna walked in.
Brianna didn’t acknowledge anyone and headed straight for the bedside. Seeing her father hooked up to an oxygen tube, her feelings were all over the place.
“Are you feeling any better?” she asked, her tone gentler.
But the word “Dad” just wouldn’t come out, no matter how hard she tried.
Whitney had gotten the clot–busting shot in time, so his condition wasn’t too serious. He was still clear- headed and could talk.
When death was staring someone in the face, all that petty fighting and pride just didn’t matter anymore.
The Meyers family and Blanca didn’t pick any fights with Brianna this time.
As soon as Brandon showed up, the hospital director and the attending physician rushed over.
They gave him a full update on Whitney’s condition and the treatment plan, and Brandon nodded in acknowledgment.
“Make sure he gets the best of everything. I’m counting on you,” Brandon said, playing the role of the considerate benefactor as always.
Once the doctors left. Whitney barely managed a whisper. “I want to talk to Brianna alone. Could you all step yut for a bit?
“What’s so important you can’t say it in front of everyone?” Blanca complained, annoyed. Ever since he woke

up, he stopped doing what she said.
She was worried he might give Brianna something on the sly.
“Out!” Whitney barked, his tone leaving no room for argument.
“Come on, Blanca, let’s step outside for a bit,” Brandon said.
