When Brianna saw Reese holding Kendra hostage, everything went dark for her, and her knees gave way. Brandon caught her just in time.
His hands were icy as he gripped her firmly. He looked up toward where Reese stood, his voice so cold it was almost chilling, sharp as ice. “Name your terms.”
“That’s bold!” Reese pressed the back of the knife against Kendra’s neck. “You nearly bankrupted me. Isn’t it fair to pay with your daughter’s life?”
“Fair,” Brandon said, his voice icy and calm. Only Brianna noticed his hands were shaking.
“One hundred million!”
“Deal,” Brandon answered without missing a beat. He pulled Brianna into his arms, steadying her before she could break down.
Reese smirked. “Five hundred million, plus Brianna’s life. In exchange, your daughter gets to walk away unharmed.”
“Two hundred million,” Brandon said, his voice slicing through the lingering hum of the engines. “Cash, offshore account, immediate transfer. Release her, and you can leave. No consequences, today or ever.”
Reese narrowed her eyes, her mind clicking like an abacus in the dead of night.
In the distance, several black speedboats cut through the waves, their engines menacing and relentless, like harbingers of doom.
“Fine! Two hundred million, and one more condition-” She kicked the railing. “Let Darcy and me walk away together.”
Brandon lowered his gaze to Darcy, who was trussed up tight. He said quietly, “She stays.”
Each word struck like an ice pick against iron.
Reese let go of Darcy and yanked Kendra up. The girl had cried herself hoarse; now she was just shaking, wracked with silent sobs.
“I don’t trust you,” Reese smirked, tracing the tip of the blade along Kendra’s collarbone. A thin line of blood appeared-sharp and vivid. “Money first, then the girl.”
Brandon’s pupils contracted, but his grip was frighteningly steady. “Release her first. The money hits your

Over the radio, the captain’s voice was low and urgent: “We’ve got armed intruders on the cruise ship. Requesting immediate backup.”
The sea wind carried a lethal chill, and time stretched razor-thin, hanging by a thread.

Brianna wrenched herself free from Brandon’s grasp, staggered into the light, her voice tearing through the air, “Reese, you want me! Take me instead!”
She spread her arms wide, offering herself as the last shield. “I’ll come up. Let the girl go!”
The spotlight threw her shadow onto the ship’s hull, slender yet unyielding.
Brandon’s profile was icy pale, his jaw so tight it looked ready to snap. But he didn’t
stop her.
Up on the platform, Reese grinned, like she’d finally landed the catch she’d been waiting for.
“Alright,” she shouted, “come up here alone. No weapons, nothing in your hands.”
The knife moved away from Kendra’s throat for a second, then pressed right back as a warning. “If you bring anyone else, she goes overboard first.”
The cruise ship’s engines growled, waves crashing against the hull like a million ticking clocks counting down. Brianna didn’t look back. In her heels, she climbed the iron steps, heading upward.
“Four hundred million!” Brandon’s voice wasn’t loud, but it hit the deck like a hammer-calm, but impossible to ignore.
He stared at Brianna as she made her way up to the platform, his knuckles turning white from the strain of holding himself back.
“Let my daughter go, and you walk out of here with the cash. No one will stand in your way.”
Earlier, the captain had signaled from the shadows, and security had moved in from both sides of the deck, ready to close in. As soon as the knife was away from Kendra’s throat, they’d bring Reese down.
But Brandon couldn’t risk even a split-second mistake.
And there was no way he’d let Brianna swap herself for Kendra.
As long as Reese was willing to take the money and let Kendra go, he’d compromise-double the amount, bend his principles even more, and force himself to swallow the words “I’ll never let you get away with this.”
The sea wind carried a salty tang, and the spotlight stretched Brianna’s shadow long and thin, like a string pulled tight, ready to snap.
Brandon stood at the border of light and shadow, his voice low and gravelly, carrying a weight that brooked no refusal.
“Four hundred million. Offshore account. Funds in your account within thirty seconds.
“I just want my daughter safe.”
Hearing that, Reese’s knife wavered, and for the first time, real uncertainty flashed in her eyes.
Everything she’d poured in was gone-over a hundred million lost, and now four hundred million dangled

right in front of her, a sum she could never pile up, not in a hundred lifetimes.
In that split second of distraction, a shadow slipped up to the third deck, sticking close to the hull. Their steps were so light, even the wind didn’t notice.
‘Clair.’ Brianna’s eyes went wide in shock.
Almost at the same moment, Darcy shrieked a warning, “Watch out!”
Before Darcy’s scream had even faded, Clair lunged forward, his left arm sweeping Kendra into his embrace, while his right hand formed a fist and smashed straight into Reese’s wrist.
The blade missed its target, slashing across Clair’s upper arm instead. Blood splattered onto the railing, bright as a crimson ribbon.
He didn’t even grunt, just raised his leg and delivered a vicious kick right into Reese’s stomach.
Reese toppled backward over the railing, crashing onto the main deck like a kite with its string cut. There was a heavy thud, and the crack of breaking bones was unmistakable.
Security rushed in, twisting her arms behind her back. The whole thing was over, clean and fast.
Only then did Brianna finally hear her own heartbeat, each beat heavier, each one more painful than the last.
Sobbing, she rushed forward and crushed Kendra into her embrace, holding her so close it was as if she wanted to merge their bones and blood. Her tears rained down onto Kendra’s hair, burning hot enough to make them both tremble.
Brandon arrived moments later, wrapping his arms around them and holding mother and daughter tight against his chest, as if he could shield them from everything.
The spotlight was blinding white, but he closed his eyes, holding them like they were his whole world.
In that moment, the deck was filled only with the anguished cries of those who’d survived-wind, the scent of blood, the ship’s horn, all drowned out by their sobs.
The cruise ship docked, and a cold blue sea of flashing police and ambulance lights washed over the port.
Darcy was escorted away in handcuffs, her face drained of all color. The injured were wheeled away on stretchers, while the piercing sirens of ambulances cut through the night sky.
Brianna wouldn’t leave Kendra’s side, riding in the ambulance and holding her daughter’s wrist tight the whole way. She didn’t let go until the doctor finally took off his stethoscope and said, “She’s just scared. No injuries, not even a scratch.”
Only then did Brianna finally exhale, her knuckles white with tension.
Clair and Clifford escorted Gabrielle and Kendra back to the hotel; Brandon and Brianna remained at the hospital.
