Chapter 164 Don’t Look Back
As soon as Kane left, Tristan pushed the door open and walked in.

He stood in the doorway, backlit, his sharp silhouette cutting through the shadows. Tristan’s gaze was locked on the spot where Kane had just left, his eyes narrowed and menacing.
Tristan had heard every word Kane said, loud and clear. “I walked right into it. I own up to it.”
“What did he want?” Tristan’s voice was low and rough.
Brianna had her back to him, gathering up a scattered stack of papers. She didn’t even look up as she replied, “It was nothing important.”
‘Nothing important?’ Tristan scoffed inwardly.
His Adam’s apple bobbed, and the rage in his chest threatened to burst right through his shirt.
He stared at her, searching her face for any sign she was affected, even the slightest flush, a hint of moisture in her eyes-anything to prove that when Kane had cornered her with that confession, she hadn’t been as indifferent as she pretended.
But she showed nothing, not a hint of emotion.
Her expression was calm, not even her lashes trembled.
She handed him the documents, her fingertips cold. “Dexter Gems wants to do a spring collab with Horizon Group. Kane set it up. Take a look.”
Tristan didn’t take them and said, “It’s better for the brand if we handle it ourselves.”
He heard his own voice, rough and hoarse, as if muffled behind a fog.
He added, “Stop chasing after collaborations. Stop…”
‘No more clinging to other people’s coattails,’ he thought.
But he swallowed the last part, forcing it down.
Brianna finally looked up, but only gave him an offhand smile, casual and unconcerned.
She said, “Caught between a rock and a hard place-if I don’t have a big player to lean on, am I just supposed to wait until I’m broke and begging?”
Her joke cut into Tristan like a blunt knife.
Suddenly, he felt like the real beggar here. After more than a decade as her childhood companion, he still couldn’t get a single honest word out of her.
“Is Unity Group struggling now that you turned down Kane?” His voice softened, almost humble, almost

begging.
Brianna’s hand froze around her pen.

She saw the worry in his eyes-so intense, so raw, like it could pull her in. Her breath faltered, and she quickly looked away, reaching for her water glass.
Her fingers touched the glass, and she realized the water was already ice cold.
“It’s fine,” she said, her back still to him, her throat dry. “It’s not that bad. But with the Levy Group under siege, Unity Group can’t find another partner.”
Tristan refused to budge, his voice stretched tight. “I’ll figure something out.”
“And what exactly can you do?” Brianna asked.
She suddenly turned, water splashing onto her hand, the chill biting. “Are you going to beg your father? The Pratt Group isn’t some charity. What do you have to trade for his help?”
Her smile looked more like she was about to cry than actually smiling. “Don’t kid yourself, Tristan.”
Those words were the last straw, snapping whatever self-control he had left.
Tristan stepped forward and grabbed her wrist, his palm burning hot. His voice was low, almost pleading. “Take me instead, okay?”
The whole room went dead silent.
Brianna’s eyes widened, then she gave a soft, almost relieved smile, as if letting go. “You’re right. You should go home now.”
She suddenly caught the emotion in Tristan’s eyes, and understood him at last-the heavy, unspoken feelings he’d carried since they were kids.
“There are only eight days left in the cooling-off period,” Tristan said, his throat tight, each word like a blade cutting through him. “Has Brandon come back?”
That one question shattered all her defenses.
Brianna’s face turned pale, her fingers unconsciously digging deep into her palm, trying to steady herself.

former golden boy now everyone’s favorite punching bag.
Every time she saw him, it was like her heart was being pounded flat by a hammer.
He was the man who’d hurt her most, but also her daughter’s father-the only one she’d ever truly loved, the only one she’d ever truly hated, and the one she could never cut out of her life, no matter how hard she tried.
Tristan watched as her eyes went red in a flash, his chest tightening painfully.
“Brianna,” he called out softly, like he was afraid she’d shatter if he spoke too loud. “Don’t look back, okay?”
Brianna turned away, her shoulders trembling, but she held back her tears.
She didn’t dare.
If she started crying, she’d never be able to steel herself again. If she broke down, she’d be the one to send Brandon, fighting alone in the storm, over the edge.
If Brandon hadn’t gotten himself into so much trouble, she would’ve been happy to end this marriage. But seeing him so down and out now, she couldn’t help but feel her heart soften.
By six in the evening, darkness had begun to spill across the sky, closing in layer by layer.
Brianna got out of the car with Kendra, and as soon as they stepped into the Levy family, she could feel the tension in the air-like a wire stretched so tight it could snap at any second.
The entryway lights were white, making the living room feel like an interrogation room.
Gabrielle sat in the main seat, her back ramrod straight. Her once-sharp eyes were now dull and weary.
Margo lounged on the couch, a strawberry pinched between her fingers. She bit into it, juice splattering everywhere, her lips stained an almost unnatural red, like she’d just drunk blood.
“Well, well, look who finally decided to show up,” Margo drawled, her voice soft but laced with venom. “The second your husband hits rock bottom, you’re kicking the door open and running for it. You really know how to play your cards, don’t you?”
Kendra’s little hand suddenly trembled in Brianna’s grasp.
At eight years old, she’d already learned to swallow her fear, but her knuckles still turned white.
Brianna crouched down, her voice soft as a feather, but with a chill sharp as a blade. “I will explain when we’re home.”
Kendra nodded, her little leather shoes brushed the carpet, every step careful and silent.
Gabrielle reached out and pulled Kendra into her arms, holding her tighter and tighter, like she was clinging to the last piece of driftwood in a flood.
Gabrielle looked up, her gaze, framed by her graying hair, settling on Brianna’s face.

Her voice was hoarse, but still carried that familiar note of authority. “Given the circumstances, I don’t object to you two getting divorced. But you shouldn’t have kept it from me.”
“Gabrielle…” Brianna started to say.
Margo bit off the strawberry stem with a loud snap, her laughter slicing right through the tension.
She said, “Mom, you’re totally in the dark, aren’t you? She’s already got Kane confessing his feelings. The divorce is just her way of making room for her new lover.”
Her words lit the fuse, like tossing a match into gasoline.
