Chapter 170 Death Sentence
With Brandon back to look after the kids, Brianna drove back to the Harper residence.

Caroline was half-reclined in her wicker chair, the sunset highlighting her graying temples. Her hands were frail, veins standing out, and she looked even older than the last time Brianna had seen her.
Brianna’s chest tightened, as if an invisible hand were squeezing her heart.
“Grandma, I’m back,” Brianna said softly, crouching down beside the chair, her voice low and gentle, tinged with a belated apology.
After chatting for a while, Brianna finally told Caroline about her plan to go to Valeentia.
Caroline’s hand trembled as she reached out and took Brianna’s, her palm frail but still warm.
“Go! Go as far as you want. With your uncle and aunt around, I can still hold up,” Caroline said.
She patted Brianna’s hand, her tone brisk, slicing right through Brianna’s doubts.
“Brandon’s got plenty of faults, but he really cares about Kendra. So don’t worry,” Caroline added.
Caroline’s simple “Go” felt like it tore open Brianna’s heart, sending a surge of bittersweet emotion rushing through her. She lowered her head, hiding her stinging eyes, her throat aching with the weight of it all.
“I’ll visit you often, Grandma,” Brianna said softly.
Caroline laughed warmly, the wrinkles at the corners of her eyes softening. “Alright, I’ll be waiting for you, my little girl.”
Her family’s support was like a torch handed to her in the darkness, lighting up her path ahead.
Brianna took a deep breath, swallowed the lump in her throat, and tried to sound casual. “The court notified us that Darcy’s case goes to trial tomorrow.”
Caroline’s cloudy eyes suddenly brightened, and she slapped the armrest hard. “Hmph! Justice at last. We’ve waited so long for this day.”
That “hmph” was loaded with years of pent-up resentment, and it echoed Brianna’s own feelings deep down.
Brianna smiled and tucked the blanket around Caroline.
The next morning at nine, Brianna stepped into the courthouse lobby in her high heels, her crimson lips exuding icy allure. Every stride was like a runway walk. Today, she was here to witness her nemesis’s downfall.
Darcy was led in by the bailiffs, her presence a shadow of her former self.
The once-proud “swan” now wore a prison uniform, her ankles shackled, the chains rattling with every step, like the remnants of shattered wings.

Six months behind bars had drained her dry, leaving only a brittle husk.

Her skin was sallow, her eyes vacant, and her hair, dry as straw, clung to her cheeks. Her beauty and arrogance lay in ruins, trampled underfoot.
The trial moved at a dizzying speed. The court-appointed attorney barely put up a defense, and after just two hours, the judge slammed the gavel. “Death sentence, to be carried out immediately.”
Darcy sat numb, listening as if the verdict was for someone else entirely.
It wasn’t until she was hauled to her feet and turned around that her gaze accidentally met Brianna’s. In those hollow, lifeless eyes, a sudden flash of venomous hatred ignited.
“Brianna!” Darcy howled, her voice slicing through the air like nails on glass, so piercing it sent chills down the spines of everyone in the gallery.
The bailiffs pinned her down, chains clattering furiously, but she lunged like a vengeful demon, hell-bent on dragging Brianna into the abyss with her.
Brianna rose slowly, a radiant curve at her lips. Her voice was light as a feather, but every word dripped with blood. “Relax. I’ll make sure your mother is well taken care of.”
At the word “mother,” Darcy’s eyes shrank, an animalistic growl rumbling from her throat as she fought wildly, the sleeve of her prison uniform ripping open. But no matter how sharp her hatred, it couldn’t break through those iron bars.
Brianna turned, her long hair slicing through the air in a cold, elegant arc.
Sunlight fell across her shoulders, like a winner’s mantle under the spotlight. She lifted her hand and gave the air a graceful farewell wave.
As the trial ended, the crowd whispered with mixed emotions.
Brianna left without a backward glance, heading straight to the consulate.
She slid her passport across the counter, and the work visa stamp landed with a sharp, final snap.
Looking at the visa, her gaze was steady. The old debts were paid, and a new journey was about to start.
The night hung heavy, making it hard to breathe.
Outside the Harper family, the black Maybach lay in wait, headlights burning, like a beast guarding the night.
Brianna caught sight of it from a distance, her heart dropping. ‘What is he doing here?’ she thought.
Almost on instinct, she spun the wheel, gliding her car silently into a shadowy side street. She cut the engine and lights, her fingers gripping the steering wheel so hard her knuckles went pale.
She refused to look back.
She dialed, lowering her voice, trying to sound calm. “Grandma, something came up. I have to go on a

business trip. I won’t be home for a few days.”

Caroline raised her voice, almost theatrically, as if she was playing along. “Oh, a business trip, huh?”
The next moment, there was a rustle as the phone was snatched away, and a man’s hurried breathing buzzed through the line, sharp and electric in her ear.
“Where are you?” Brandon demanded.
His voice was rough, tight, and so commanding it left no room for argument.
Brianna’s throat tightened, and despite her best efforts, her voice came out shaky. “I… I’m not in town right
now.”
“I want your exact location,” Brandon said, his words clipped and cold, leaving no room for argument.
She could practically see him-his brows drawn low, gripping the phone so hard his knuckles looked like they might snap.
She used to love that determined look of his, like he always had to win. Now, it just grated on her nerves. “Go spend time with Kendra,” Brianna said, throwing out her daughter’s name as a last line of defense. “She’s not doing well lately. She needs you.”
On the other end, there was only silence-just Brandon’s tense breathing.
After a long pause, he finally spoke, his voice hoarse and low. “Alright, I’ll wait for you.”
‘When you come back, I’ll shatter every bit of my pride and lay it at your feet, Brandon thought.
Brianna hung up, but the heaviness in her chest only got worse. Sitting in the dark, she watched the car finally turn around, its taillights fading out of sight. Only then did she head back to the Harper family, slow and steady.
When she walked in, Caroline didn’t ask anything-just handed her a steaming cup of tea.
Brianna was a bit embarrassed, tucking her hair behind her ear and forcing a sheepish smile. “Saw his car outside, didn’t want to run into him, so I made up a story,” she admitted.
Caroline nodded knowingly and sighed quietly.
“Ever since you got hurt, I’ve realized he’s actually a decent guy. Sure, he acts all icy, but deep down, he’s got a
