The afternoon sunlight draped itself across the living room like strands of velvet, soft and luxurious.

Brianna returned home, carrying a strawberry cake she’d bought for her daughter Kendra. She was feeling fairly cheerful.

She picked up her phone, still resting quietly on the nightstand where she’d forgotten it that morning.

She casually pressed the power button, and the screen lit up. The number of missed calls instantly popped up: 113, all from Brandon.

Her breath caught, as if those glaring red numbers of missed calls had scorched her. Her fingers clenched instinctively.

Winning the lawsuit and what James said this morning had been like a single stone dropped into water- ripples that faded into silence.

But now, these hundred-plus calls felt like a barrage of stones raining down all at once, sending shockwaves everywhere.

‘Is he crazy?’ Brianna thought, her brows drawing together with a chill.

The divorce certificate was still locked in the drawer, the official seal clear as day. They weren’t the kind of exes who could just pick up the phone and talk anymore.

Brandon had always been so proud and self-controlled, yet here he was, calling again and again, like he was desperately reaching out, or maybe throwing down one last challenge, refusing to accept it was over.

The screen went dark, and the living room fell silent again.

Brianna stood there, her breath unsteady, but she quickly plugged her phone in to charge, with no intention of calling Brandon back.

She turned and walked toward Kendra, who was in the yard, combing her doll’s hair. Her steps were light, treating those missed calls as nothing but background noise.

“Mommy, you’re back!” Kendra looked up, her smile bright. Brianna bent down, gently tucking a stray lock of hair behind Kendra’s ear, her voice soft and gentle, as if nothing had happened. “Come on, let’s go open the strawberry cake.”

A breeze drifted by, making the curtains sway gently.

Her phone lit up again in the corner, vibrating. The sound was muffled by the carpet, like the frustrated grow! of a trapped animal, sealed away in another world. Brianna never looked back-not even once.

On the other end, Brandon’s knuckles were white from gripping the phone. After handling all the follow-up business, he bolted for the airport.

Standing by the terminal’s floor-to-ceiling windows, he dialed that number he knew by heart for what felt like the hundredth time. The cold, robotic voice on the other end was like a wire wrapping tighter and tighter

around his chest, making it hard to breathe.

It had been thirty-seven hours since he walked out of the courthouse yesterday, and all he wanted was to tell her, “I won. You don’t have to be scared anymore.”

Why won’t she answer? Brandon wondered.

The anxiety in his eyes was almost blazing.

Just then, an overpowering rose scent cut through the air, almost too sweet to handle, and the sharp click of red heels grew louder and louder. Allison burst onto the scene, stepping right in front of him.

“Brandon,” she said with a playful, intimate tone, her words lingering in the air. “Leaving without a word?”

Brandon swallowed, trying to keep his cool. “You’re tired. You should really get some rest.”

His tone was so gentle, it was almost like he was soothing a little kid who didn’t know any better.

Allison felt a stab in her chest, and her carefree mask nearly shattered. She tried to keep her smile, but the hurt leaked through her eyes. “After everything we’ve been through, you really are… heartless.”

“Heartless” came out almost like a tease, but her eyes were shaking, betraying her true feelings.

Brandon smiled, but it never touched his eyes-his expression was icy, a chill settling over his face.

“Allison, we’ve known each other for twenty years. You know exactly what I’m like,” he said.

He paused, his words cold and cutting. “Don’t come back.”

Allison’s breath froze for a moment.

She caught the threat in his tone. She wasn’t oblivious. She knew the whole lawsuit had been her own setup.

She knew all too well. She knew how ruthless Brandon could be, and that he couldn’t tolerate even the tiniest flaw. Still, she always held onto a bit of wishful thinking-maybe, just maybe, he’d treat her differently.

Maybe he saw through every one of her schemes, but was the only one who could truly recognize the sincerity in her heart.

Her anxiety was about to burst out of her chest. She couldn’t wait any longer and just couldn’t gamble anymore.

Allison lunged into Brandon’s arms, holding on tight to the chest she once knew so well, burying her face in his scent. “Brandon, I was wrong… Can we start over? Please?”

After twenty-two years, this was the first time she’d ever swallowed her pride.

The once-proud black swan finally bowed her head to someone else, setting aside her dignity for the very first

time.

Brandon looked down at her, his gaze pure ridicule. “Ms. Moore, this is just meaningless now.”

That single word, “Allison”, hit her like a slap, showing he had no patience left for her.

Allison froze, slowly lifting her head to meet his cold, unfathomable indifference. In that instant, she could almost hear her world shattering.

Brandon gently peeled her fingers away, his movements as elegant as dusting off something unwanted. “Goodbye, Ms. Moore.”

He paused, then twisted the knife. “Actually, let’s make it never again.”

That was all the mercy he could offer-leaving his ex with a scrap of dignity, nothing to do with love.

He turned and walked off, not looking back even once.

Allison’s tears crashed down as she became desperate to run after him, but the bodyguards held her back, refusing to let her move.

Helpless, she could only watch as his silhouette vanished through the boarding gate-like a blade severing every last hope she had.

Allison slumped into the cold seat, feeling utterly drained, as if all her strength had been sucked out of her.

“This isn’t how it’s supposed to be…” she murmured, her nails digging painfully into her palm.

She thought bitterly, ‘Nothing I want ever slips through my fingers. I’ve always been the one to leave others behind. Since when was I the one getting left?’

‘Kane broke his agreement for Brianna, and Brandon was already divorced, so why is he still going back to

that woman?’

She’d set him up, and if she hadn’t abandoned her plan out of selfishness, he would be dead by now.

She’d already hinted for him to stay, to play the game with her. But for that woman, he was willing to give up everything.

‘That woman-a clingy parasite who can’t even survive on her own-what right does she have to steal everything that should’ve been mine?’ Allison seethed.

She suddenly sprang to her feet, fiercely wiping away her tears and humiliation. She pulled out her phone and booked a flight to Klamdiff.
