Chapter 18 Josefina’s Birthday Party
Brianna’d planned to stay a few more days, but with Brandon around, she’d lost all interest.
After the exhibit, she booked an afternoon flight and headed back to the hotel to pack up.
Sure enough, there’d been no trace of Brandon’s things last night, but today he’d moved his entire suitcase in.
Brianna eyed his clothes, all ironed and hung up neatly, and couldn’t help wondering, ‘What on earth has gotten into him? Isn’t he the one who can’t stand being near me?’
She quickly gathered her stuff, hurried downstairs, and let Clair drive her to the airport.
Not seeing Brandon anywhere made Clair breathe a sigh of relief. He thought, ‘The guy’s aura is just too intense.
He asked, “Where’s your husband? Not leaving with you?”
She said, “He’s got things to take care of.”
Clair sensed she wasn’t keen on talking about her family.
“Next month, we’re hosting a show in Klamdiff. You up for coming?”
“Definitely! I wouldn’t miss it!” Brianna beamed, her face lighting up.
Sunlight streamed through the airport’s huge glass windows, casting a golden glow along her profile.
Clair stared, momentarily entranced.
Back in Klamdiff, she rushed home, arriving after 9 PM.
After showering and slipping into bed, all she wanted was to unwind.
She grabbed her tablet to scroll social media and kept running into promo videos of Darcy.
She thought, ‘What is going on? Has she broken into entertainment? I’ve only been away a few days. How much has happened?‘
She checked the trending list: [Klamdiff Ballet Troupe Darcy Joins Reality Show] was sitting at the bottom.
Just then, her phone rang. It was Patsy.
Patsy said, “Hey, you see the trends?”
Brianna said, “Yeah, looking at it now.”
“Want to do something about it?”
“Like what?” Brianna replied evenly.
“You’re just going to let that mother–daughter pair run wild?”
“Wait and see. The higher they rise, the harder they fall.” Brianna stayed calm, no anger in her voice.
When the time came to get even, the higher that duo climbed, the more devastating the blow.
Her mood remained unruffled, and she slept dreamlessly through the night.
With her contest entry submitted, it was time to push forward with starting the company.
Hiring staff, churning out designs, sourcing suppliers, setting up production lines… She was spinning like a top, no time to catch her breath.
Patsy’s family had been in export manufacturing, but with the economic changes lately, orders had dwindled, though the factory was still running, so she couldn’t just drop it all.
Luckily, Tristan had plenty of free time; he tagged along everywhere, handling a bunch of issues for her,
In the two weeks since she’d returned, Brandon hadn’t contacted her once.
Kendra, though, had called a few times, pleading to see Brianna.
But spread thin as she was, Brianna kept promising they’d hang out, only to delay it again.
The guilt ate at her, but at this critical juncture, she simply didn’t have the bandwidth to be a proper mom.
Before she knew it, the Josefina’s birthday arrived.
No skipping this one; she had to go.
For the first time in what felt like forever, Brianna called Kendra.
On the other end, Kendra’s voice burst with excitement. “Mom!”
Chapter 18 Josefin’s Birthday Party
Brianna said, “Today’s Josefina’s birthday. Want to head over with me?”
m already at Grandma’s! She picked me up this morning. When are you coming?”
Brianna massaged her temples. She wondered if Brandon had told the family about the divorce.
As Brianna started to respond Josefina’s voice came through. “Brianna, when are you and Brandon arriving?”
“I’m heading out now, I’ll be there soon.
“And Brandon?”
From the sound of it, he hadn’t mentioned it.
“Oh, he’s tying up some loose ends; he’ll be right behind me.”
After hanging up, Brianna rushed over to the Levy family estate.
As usual, the party was held at the mountain villa. The Levy family had a wide network of relatives and friends, not to mention all the folks looking to get in their good graces. Even though it wasn’t a major milestone birthday, quite a few people turned out.
Before going to the villa, everyone met at the Levy family residence to offer birthday gifts to Josefina. The sons, grandsons, and great–grandsons all bowed in respect, and then the whole group headed out in a big procession.
When Brianna got there, she respectfully served coffee to Josefina.
She took a seat next to Josefina and handed over her gift: a pair of stunning violet bracelets, with deep, vibrant color and flawless clarity.
Josefina took them with sheer delight.
Trina had grown up right under Josefina’s nose, a clever, no–nonsense girl who’d built her own empire in the business world. Tragically, she’d married the wrong guy.
He wasn’t just incompetent, he’d stirred up one scandal after another, which ultimately led to her dying far too young. Josefina had watched the mother–daughter duo endure years of hardship and had hoped that bringing Brianna into the Levy family through marriage would let her provide some real protection.
But to her surprise, Brandon’s marriage to her had always been focky.
All these years, Josefina had seen Brianna’s struggles firsthand, and it broke her heart, but at her age, her influence wasn’t what it used to be.
She genuinely ached for Brianna and cherished her gift that much more because of it.
From the second Brianna walked in, Josefina clutched her hand and wouldn’t let go.
Margo watched this with a huff and couldn’t resist griping to Gabrielle. “If you didn’t know any better, you’d swear she was the favorite granddaughter.”
Gabrielle, who always had a clear sense of right and wrong, shut her down impatiently. “That’s enough out of you!” By departure time, Brandon still hadn’t appeared.
Brianna was baffled too. She thought, ‘He is always so meticulous about propriety, dotting every i and crossing every t. How could he bail on such a big occasion?‘
Margo was stewing over it herself. She hadn’t caught wind of any major company drama. She thought, ‘Are they scheming something without looping me in?‘
The villa was a property Josefina had managed back in her prime, nestled in the suburbs amid mountains and rivers, a gorgeous retreat.
As the Levy family’s business grew, the upscale spot had transformed into a refined, old–world private club for family getaways and sealing deals.
When they pulled up to the villa, Brandon was already there, waiting.
