For a few days, they stayed home.

Brianna doted on Kendra, and she and Brandon shared a deep, loving bond. For a brief moment, Brianna was living the life she’d always dreamed of.

She cherished every moment of this hard-won happiness.

She committed every little detail of their time together as a family to memory. Time flew by, and before they knew it, it was already the end of December.

After more than four months, the pregnancy was stable now.

The weather was freezing. Snow kept falling, one snowfall after another. The snow piled up higher and higher. Once again, ski season had arrived.

Kendra kept whining to her parents about wanting to go to the ski resort.

Brandon immediately shot her down.

“No way,” Brandon said firmly. “Your mom’s not able to go skiing right now. Next year, we will take you, okay?” Kendra folded her little arms across her chest and stuck out her lower lip in a pout.

“Hmph! I want to go,” Kendra insisted. “Everyone else in my class gets to go skiing. Why am I the only one who can’t go?”

Brandon was about to say something, but Brianna spoke up first. “It’s okay. Let’s go then. It’s getting pretty dull just staying home every day. If Kendra wants to go, we’ll go with her.”

Brandon finally gave in.

“Okay, I’ll make the arrangements,” he said.

Kendra was so happy that she started jumping up and down.

“Mom, you’re the best. I love you the most,” she squealed.

When Brianna heard Kendra say that, she couldn’t help but feel touched by her daughter’s words.

They decided to go on the weekend.

They invited Patsy, Clifford, Tristan, and a few of Brandon’s friends to join them.

The group arrived at the hot spring ski resort.

It was one of the Levy Group’s properties.

When they finally got there, night had already fallen.

Kendra kept begging her parents to let her go skiing.

Brianna patiently soothed Kendra.

Seeing Brianna spoil her yet again, Kendra became even more unreasonable.

“It’s already dark, so let’s relax in the hot springs tonight,” Brianna said. “After that, Dad will take you to set off some sky lanterns, okay?”

Kendra pouted with a sassy attitude, acting all spoiled.

Kendra was the only kid in the group, so everyone spoiled her rotten.

Everyone was fussing over Kendra, trying to keep her happy.

Just then, a clear male voice called out, “Kendra? Hey, it really is you, Kendra.”

A young boy dashed over. His eyes sparkled with delight and surprise.

“Justin! Hey, kiddo, come here. Let me take a look at you. You’ve really shot up,” Brandon said. “Uncle Brandon,” Justin shouted as he dashed over and leapt into Brandon’s arms.

“Justin,” Kendra called out.

It was only then that Kendra realized the boy was actually Justin.

Brianna looked up.

Just then, she spotted Margo and Benedict walking over.

Brianna just smiled.

Brandon glanced at Margo and Benedict.

“Benedict, when did you get back?” Brandon asked.

A flash of resentment crossed Benedict’s eyes.

“I just got back. I didn’t expect to run into you here,” Benedict said. “What are you guys doing here?”

Margo’s gaze lingered on Brianna and Brandon.

Suddenly, as if remembering something, her eyebrow shot up.

“Why don’t we all hang out together?” Margo suggested.

Kendra was absolutely thrilled now that she had Justin to play with.

The group had dinner together.

After dinner, everyone went to enjoy the hot springs together.

Brianna was still early in her pregnancy, so she couldn’t go with the others.

Patsy stayed behind to keep her company.

Patsy and Brianna sat down together in the café at the resort.

They gazed out as the pure white snow seemed to reflect upward, making the sky look misty and pale gray.

Patsy was peeling an orange.

The air was instantly filled with the sweet scent of citrus.

She shot Brianna a playful wink.

“So, you two made up?” Patsy teased.

Brianna gave a self-deprecating smile.

“It’s just the darkness before dawn,” she said.

Patsy frowned.

“Honestly, sometimes I just can’t figure out what goes on in that head of yours,” Patsy said.

Brianna was confused. “What do you mean?” she asked.

“Those past few years, he was so distant with you,” Patsy said. “You weren’t after money or benefits and

stayed loyal to him. Now, his attitude toward you has obviously changed. But you insist on getting a divorce. What is it that you really want?”

Brianna gave a bitter smile.

‘Yeah, what am I really looking for?’ Brianna wondered to herself.

“He doesn’t love me,” Brianna said. “He’s only treating me like this now because I’m pregnant. He’s just staying married for appearances.”

‘Honestly, maybe he’s actually eager for a divorce, Brianna mused to herself.

Patsy leaned in, getting closer.

She lowered her voice and advised, “Look, he’s the richest CEO out there. The way he’s treating you now shows that he’s not a bad guy. You should be content.”

Patsy, still a bit annoyed, went on, “Seriously, you need to stop binge-watching those sappy romance shows.”

Brianna understood that Patsy was actually talking about whether she should keep holding on to her relationship with Brandon.

“That’s why I should let him go,” Brianna said.

Patsy was speechless and let out a frustrated laugh.

Suddenly, Brianna thought of something.

Brianna asked, “Is your family having any trouble?”

Patsy looked away, avoiding eye contact.

She grinned broadly, acting all casual.

“Oh, it’s nothing, really,” Patsy said, brushing it off. “The economy’s been in a downturn these past couple of years. Orders are down. Our family business has taken a bit of a hit.”

Brianna’s worry was written all over her face.

“Is there anything I can do to help?” she asked.

“Don’t worry about me,” Patsy said. “If I make more, I spend more. If I make less, I just tighten my belt. And if things ever get really bad, I still have my fabulously rich bestie to mooch off, right?”

Patsy let out a forced laugh, trying to play it cool.

Brianna knew that Patsy was strong-willed. The tougher things got, the stronger Patsy became. Watching Patsy act all tough, Brianna figured she had to be dealing with some pretty big problems.

Knowing how strong-willed Patsy was, Brianna decided not to press the issue any further.

But she quietly tucked the matter away in her mind, determined to remember it.

That night, after she returned to her room, Brianna gave Mitch a call. She asked if he knew what was going on with the Sampson family.

Mitch finally explained the situation.

International trade had really taken a hit these past couple of years.

The Sampson family had been targeted by ruthless competitors.

But they just couldn’t bear to let go of the workers who’d spent most of their lives with the company.

They’d kept the business running at a loss for quite some time now. They probably wouldn’t be able to keep the business afloat much longer.

Brianna listened in silence.

Her heart ached.

Back when Brianna was starting her business, Patsy was always there, doing everything she could to help.

But now, Patsy had her own troubles to deal with.

Brianna waited for Brandon to come back.

And after she settled Kendra down and made sure she was asleep, Brianna started talking to Brandon about the Sampson family.

Brandon nodded in agreement.

He picked up his phone and called his assistant to check into what was going on with the Sampson family.

The couple went to bed together.

Outside, the night was peaceful and still. Occasionally, the sound of snow falling from the trees broke the silence. It made sleep come even easier.

The next morning, Kendra was up bright and early.
