Chapter 81

That evening, the Meyers family were restless.

Brianna had just gotten home.

As soon as her car pulled up to the front gate, she saw Whitney waiting at the door.

Brianna gave a cold chuckle, parked her car, and chose not to enter through the garage.

Instead, she walked right up to the front door and stopped in front of Whitney.

This time, Brianna didn’t hold back. She went straight for the sarcasm.

“Is this about Darcy, again?” she said.

Whitney’s posture softened, guilt written all over his face.

“Brianna, please, give your sister a break,” he pleaded.

Brianna crossed her arms over her chest.

“So you want me to get a divorce now?” Brianna shot back.

Whitney tried to look troubled, as if the whole thing was weighing on him.

“Now the whole world knows. Darcy’s kid needs a dad, doesn’t he?” Whitney said.

“So my kid’s just supposed to go without a mom?” Brianna shot back.

Whitney’s patience was wearing thin.

“Divorced or not, you’re still Kendra’s

Before Brianna could respond, Whitney cut her off, “If you really can’t let go, just take her with you.”

Brianna found his bandit logic so ridiculous, she couldn’t help but laugh.

“So my kid’s just supposed to go without a dad?” she shot back.

Whitney was momentarily stunned, trying to cover up his frustration and embarrassment.

“Don’t be unreasonable. You and Brandon are already separated. Why are you still holding onto being Mrs. Levy?” he snapped.

Brianna shook her head helplessly.

“Shouldn’t you guys take a hard look at yourselves and stop chasing after things that don’t belong to you?” she shot back

Whitney’s expression soured, clearly annoyed.

“You can’t force feelings,” he grumbled.

Brianna nodded and said, “That’s right, you can’t force feelings.”

Whitney paused for a moment, impatience written all over his face.

“Brianna, I know this is cruel, but it’s the truth. Brandon doesn’t love you anymore. He loves Darcy,” he said.

“Oh, really? Did Brandon actually say that to you?” Brianna retorted.

She realized that now she just didn’t care anymore. Her heart felt numb.

“He doesn’t need to spell it out. Isn’t it obvious? Why else would Darcy be carrying his baby?” Whitney snapped.

“Darcy didn’t tell you? Earlier today, right in Brandon’s office, he said straight up he didn’t want Darcy’s kid,” Brianna said coldly.

Whitney’s face flushed with anger and embarrassment.

“He was just being considerate of your reputation. Don’t kid yourself,” he snapped.

Seeing Whitney get so worked up, Brianna felt pretty pleased with herself.

She just curled her lip, looking completely unfazed.

“I can agree to a divorce,” Brianna said.

Whitney’s eyes lit up. “Really?”

Brianna watched his reaction, then spoke slowly and clearly, “But Brandon has to come and tell me himself.”

The light in Whitney’s eyes died in an instant.

He realized she was just toying with him.

Rage flared up inside him.

But before he could explode, the fire in him sputtered out.,

His features twisted together, the wrinkles on his face etched even deeper in the dim light.

He slipped back into that humble, defeated look.

Brianna could see the heartache and worry etched across his face.

“Brianna, please, I’m asking you as your father. Darcy’s career is just starting out. Don’t let it fall apart Whitney pleaded.

‘So that’s what being a dad really means,‘ Brianna thought to herself. ‘Guess he actually has it in him to care like a father.‘

A bittersweet ache stirred in Brianna’s heart.

‘When he begged me, did he ever remember that I’m his daughter, too?‘ she wondered.

Brianna had long since given up hoping for his love, so the bitterness faded fast.

She let out a sarcastic chuckle. “You want me to just let her have everything? You really think I’m that big–hearted”

Whitney was beside himself with frustration.

“I just don’t get it. How can you not care about family at all? Why are you always so heartless?” he snapped.

“Do you even hear yourself right now? You really think all of this is somehow my fault?” Brianna shot back.

Whitney struggled to keep his temper in check. He just couldn’t figure out why Brianna was so difficult–so different from Darcy.

“Your marriage with Brandon was never good anyway. Divorce was inevitable. Why can’t you just step aside for your sister?” he snapped.

“Sister?” Brianna laughed. “My mom only had me.

“All these years, Darcy and her mother brought so much pain to my mom and me, and now you expect me to just give way because you call her my sister?”

Whitney’s anger flared as Brianna ripped open old wounds.

“Darcy is innocent. Her unborn child is innocent, too!” he shouted.

Brianna suddenly raised her voice. “And what about me?

“Was it my fault you had me? Was it my fault she ended up an illegitimate child? Was it my fault she climbed into my husband’s bed?”

“Enough!” Whitney roared. “Are you trying to make this the talk of the town? The Meyers family can’t handle that kind of embarrassment.”

Brianna just gave a cold, mocking laugh.

“If you can’t handle the shame, then maybe you shouldn’t have done something so disgraceful!” she shot back.

Whitney shifted his argument yet again.

“I’m here to figure out how to fix this, not to debate who’s right or wrong,” he said.

Brianna felt sick to her stomach at his shamelessness.

“It’s not your place to meddle in what’s going on between Brandon and me!” she snapped.

Whitney took a deep breath.

“If you get divorced, we’ll compensate you,” he said.

Brianna gave him a disdainful look.

“Unity Group can’t even compare to Brandon. Darcy will make you pay for this, and so will I,” she snapped.

Whitney pressed the issue again.

He said, “You’ve been married to Brandon for seven years and still haven’t given the Levy family a son. Getting kicked out was just a matter of time.

“Why not just divorce now, let your sister marry Brandon, and if she gives him a couple of kids, you’ll still be tied to the Levy family.”

brianna felt sick to her stomach hearing that.

She swallowed her disgust and fired back with biting sarcasm.

“Why don’t you go say that to Brandon? Or better yet, tell his mother!” she snapped

Not wanting to get dragged into this any further, Brianna turned to head inside.

Whitney grabbed her arm, his eyes filled with a vicious glint.

“So there’s no room for negotiation?” he demanded.

Brianna had already stepped onto the stairs. She turned and looked down at him from above.

She glared back at him, her eyes just as cold and ruthless.

“Go ask Darcy how I lost the child I was carrying,” she said.

Whitney’s gaze wavered, avoiding her eyes.

Brianna jerked her arm free and headed inside without looking back.

Once inside, Brianna couldn’t help but hurl her bag onto the couch.

She rubbed her temples, pacing back and forth in the living room.

Her anger simmered, refusing to die down.
