Chapter 183: I did not kill your parents

From the rooftops, inside nearby vehicles, and behind the tinted windows of the headquarters, Phantom operatives tracked every movement. Security personnel stood at their posts, outwardly calm but clearly alert to the unexpected visitors.

The lieutenant lowered his voice.

"Should we call ahead?"

Bernard shook his head.

"No. Xander already knows I’m here."

Without another word, he started toward the entrance.

"Come," he said. "Let’s not keep him waiting."

The automatic doors slid open as the two men entered the lobby.

Almost instantly, several members of Phantom’s security team shifted into position, subtly surrounding Bernard and his companion without alarming the employees passing through the lobby.

Then Hunter stepped forward and offered a polite nod.

"This way, sir."

Bernard smiled faintly and followed without hesitation.

The group moved through a series of secured corridors before stopping outside the executive office. The guard opened the door, revealing Xander and Edward already waiting inside.

The atmosphere in the room turned noticeably tense.

Xander remained seated behind his desk, his expression calm and unreadable, while Edward stood by the floor-to-ceiling window with his arms crossed.

The moment Bernard stepped inside, his eyes landed on Edward.

A chuckle escaped his lips.

"It’s been a long time, Edward."

Edward didn’t return the smile.

"Not long enough."

Bernard laughed softly at the cold response.

"You always did know how to make a guest feel unwelcome."

"This isn’t your home," Edward replied evenly. "And after everything that’s happened, I doubt you’ll find a warm reception here."

Bernard’s gaze shifted to Xander.

"So," he said, studying the younger man, "this is the grandson who thought it wise to destroy one of my operations."

Xander leaned back in his chair, completely unfazed.

"I wasn’t trying to be wise."

A brief silence followed.

"I was trying to get your attention."

The smile on Bernard’s face widened.

"And you succeeded."

Edward stepped slightly forward, his voice carrying a clear warning.

"If you’re here to threaten him, you’ve wasted your trip."

Bernard shook his head.

"No threats today."

He looked directly at Xander.

"I simply wanted to see the man bold enough to challenge Black Veil and walk away from it."

Xander met his gaze without blinking.

"If that’s all you came for, you’ve seen enough."

The air between them grew heavy, each man silently measuring the other.

Neither flinched.

Neither looked away.

It was less a conversation than the opening move in a much larger game—one where every word carried the weight of a declaration, and every silence hinted at the conflict yet to come.

Xander regarded Bernard in silence before giving Hunter a subtle nod.

Without a word, Hunter left the office.

A few moments later, the doors opened again.

Hunter returned, dragging the captured Architect into the room. With a firm shove, he forced the man to his knees in front of Bernard.

The Architect looked disheveled but otherwise unharmed, save for a split lip and a bruise forming along his jaw.

"Boss!" he exclaimed, relief flashing across his face.

Bernard barely spared him a glance.

His expression remained unreadable.

"Take him back," Bernard said flatly. "He’s of no use to me anymore."

The Architect’s face drained of color.

"What...?"

Before he could say another word, Hunter grabbed him by the shoulder and pulled him away.
