Chapter 355 Medicine
Matthew and Jaden-refused to leave Zachary’s side for even a second, taking turns pressing their hands to his forehead every few minutes to check whether the fever had broken
When Zachary woke up again, he found two anxious faces hovered right above him. His fever had left him completely disoriented, and Matthew had already scooped him up off the couch, wrapping him in a blanket and pulling him close. Jaden stood nearby, gripping a cup of water with obvious worry.
“What’s going on?” Zachary asked weakly.
“Sire, you’re burning up.” Jaden said, his voice tight with fear.
”
Matthew leaned down, his voice urgent. “Zachary, where’s the shaman around here?”
Zachary leaned heavily against Matthew, dazed, and pressed a hand to his own face. His head felt even worse now, spinning harder than before. That medicine couldn’t have expired already, could it? Why isn’t it working?
Ten minutes later, Zachary sat in a community clinic with a thermometer tucked under his arm.
“Shaman, please, take a look at him,” Matthew said.
“Shaman?” The elderly doctor chuckled. “Sorry, son, I don’t do any of that mystical stuff.”
Zachary quickly tugged at Matthew’s sleeve and offered a quick explanation. “He’s been watching too many movies lately.”
The timer went off, and the old doctor checked the thermometer. The fever was severe, he said. This called for a shot.
Zachary’s energy came roaring back instantly. “Could I just take some pills instead?”
“You’re sitting at almost a hundred and four degrees,” the doctor said. “You want your brain to fry?
“Big guy like you, scared of a little needle?”
Matthew had no idea what a “shot” even was, but he knew enough to trust the healer’s Word. “Do it. We’ll take the shot.”
Jaden took Zachary’s hand and whispered, “Don’t be scared, Sire. We’re right here with you.” Zachary’s face crumpled with dread, and he could already feel his backside aching in anticipation.
The old doctor flicked the syringe and waved him over. “Come on, then.”
In that moment Zachary genuinely considered bolting straight out the door.
The cold alcohol swab touched his skin, and his whole body jolted, his leg snapping rigid as he grabbed onto Matthew’s hand in a panic.
Something finally clicked for Matthew, and he asked, uncertain, “That thing… it’s going into his flesh?”

“What did you think it was going to do?” the doctor said.
Matthew watched Zachary’s terrified expression and felt his heart twist. “Is there maybe a different way to
treat this?”
“He’s about to cook his brain if we wait any longer!” The old doctor, a veteran of hospital work, moved with practiced precision, syringe in hand, swift and merciless.
The instant that thin needle pierced the skin, both Jaden’s and Matthew’s eyes went wide. Jaden actually. flinched, his whole body trembling, and he immediately turned to check on his Sire.
Zachary hissed through clenched teeth and shot to his feet. Matthew grabbed him to steady him. “How are you feeling?”
Whatever was in that shot packed one serious punch. Zachary just shook his head, pressing his lips into a thin line, saying nothing.
They picked up the prescription and limped out the door. Before they’d gone more than a few steps, Zachary had already climbed onto Matthew’s back. “It hurts….
“It hurts so much.”
By the time they got home, Matthew and Jaden were absolutely beside themselves with worry, practically turning into a pair of devoted servants, ready to wait on Zachary hand and foot like royalty. They wouldn’t let him lift a finger, and even brought every meal straight to his mouth while he lay there.
The plan to head back to the old hometown got pushed back two days. Only once Zachary had fully recovered did the three of them finally board the bus heading toward the remote town, rattling and swaying the whole way. By the time they reached the town, it was already afternoon. They grabbed a quick bite and settled in to wait for the next bus.
“Want me to shift into my beast form?” Matthew offered.
Zachary shook his head. The last thing he needed was to end up on the news, or worse, have someone come looking for an escaped zoo animal.
When they got off the bus, a cluster of elderly folks sat gathered under a tree at the edge of the town, and every single head turned the moment they spotted the group. “That’s Riley’s grandson.”
“What brings you back here all of a sudden?”
Zachary had already dyed his hair black ahead of time and put in colored contacts, looking exactly like the boy they all remembered. Drawing on childhood memories, he greeted them warmly and smiled. “Just on vacation. Figured I’d come back and visit for a bit.”
“Oh, and is this your boy?” The elders turned their attention to Jaden. “What a handsome little thing.”
“Those eyes are just like yours when you were little.”
“Wait, why are his eyes blue?”
Jaden was far too young for contacts to be safe, so Zachary explained, “His mother is from overseas.”

The elders gasped in surprise. “You married a foreign wife? Why didn’t you bring her along?
Zachary smiled. “She’s busy with work.”
