Chapter 357 At the Grave

Prished.

Zachary bowed his head in solemn respect, and Matthew and Jaden followed his lead, bowing their heads right alongside him.

“Grandpa, Grandma,” Zachary said, “I brought my partner home with me. Take a look and tell me what you think.

“I’m happy with him. More than happy, actually.”

“He’s been so good to me. I love him.”

Matthew bowed his head to the ground a few more times and called out softly to Zachary’s guardians too, promising he’d take care of Zachary and treat him well for the rest of his life.

Zachary brushed a smudge of dirt from Matthew’s forehead. “We’re going to build a good life together.”

He glanced over at Jaden. “This is our cub. He’s so much better behaved than I ever was.”

One of the flowers sitting before the grave suddenly rolled off and dropped to the ground. Zachary picked it up, his eyes rimmed red, and held it out to Jaden. “Your great grandma and great grandpa must really like you. They’re giving you a flower.”

Jaden took the flower and bowed his head to the ground too. “Thank you, Great-grandma and Great- grandpa.”

Zachary wiped at his eyes. “Grandpa, Grandma, how are things on your end?

“If you ever need anything, find a way to let me know. Send me a sign, anything.

“I’m doing okay. Really. Don’t worry about me.

“If you

miss me, come visit me in my dreams sometime.”

After visiting his grandparents, Zachary’s mood stayed heavy for the rest of the day. He barely touched his lunch, claiming he was tired and wanted to rest. Once he lay down, he quietly scrolled through old photos saved on his phone, and the tears just kept falling, no matter how hard he tried to stop them.

Matthew followed him inside, gently wiped the tears from Zachary’s face, and pulled him into his arms. He rubbed slow, steady circles against his back and murmured softly, “Get some rest.”

“I’ll stay right here with you.”

Zachary slowly let his wet eyes drift shut. He had no idea how much time passed, but then he saw them. His grandfather and grandmother, sitting under the old pomegranate tree in the courtyard just like they used to, fans waving lazily in their hands, smiling and waving him over. “Come here, Zachary.”

Zachary froze for a moment, then rushed forward and threw himself into their arms, sobbing uncontrollably. “I missed you so much…

“I

missed you both so much….

“What am I supposed to do? You’re both gone now. What am I supposed to do?

“I’ll never see you again. Never again.”

His grandmother cupped his face gently. “Sweetheart, it’s okay. Don’t cry anymore.”

His grandfather tapped him lightly on the head with his fan. “We’re right here with you. Look what I got you. A big watermelon.

“Nice and crisp. Sweet as can be.”

Zachary cried and ate, ate and cried.

His grandmother dabbed at his face with a cloth, then pulled a handful of loose change from her pocket. “There, there, no more tears. I’ll get you some candy.”

His grandfather gave his ear a playful tug. “Alright, alright. Later I’ll take you down to the creek to catch some fish.”

“You want roasted sweet potatoes? We’ll sneak into your great uncle’s field and grab some.”

His grandmother’s eyes crinkled with warmth as she smoothed down Zachary’s hair. “Knowing someone’s looking after you now puts our minds at ease.”

“You just need to take care of yourself, that’s all that matters.”

His grandfather waved his fan through the air with a mock threat. “And if he ever gives you trouble, I’ll come back and scare him good.”

Zachary cried even harder, sobbing so hard it felt like his whole chest might cave in. “Don’t go… please don’t go…

“Don’t…”

Matthew shook him desperately. “Wake up, Zachary, wake up!”
