Memories Hurt
Aurora’s POV
A soft knock taps at my door.
I wipe at my face quickly, wiping the last of the tears from my cheeks. “Come in,” I say, voice hoarse, putting my phone back on my nightstand.
The door creaks open and Leon peeks his head in. His hair’s a little messy, and he’s holding a mug in one hand, his other still on the doorknob like he’s not sure if he should stay.
“Hey,” he says, voice low. “You okay?“I nod, shifting slightly to sit up more. The bandages pull, but I manage. He steps inside fully, closing the door behind him with a soft click. Crosses the room and sets the mug on my nightstand.
“Chamomile,” he says. “Jace says it’s good for… everything, apparently. And this time, the mug is break proof.
“He grins proudly as he hands me a bubble wrapped mug, careful not to spill anything.
I glance at the mug, then up at him. “Thanks.
“Leon shrugs like it’s nothing, but there’s a quiet look in his eyes. One that says he’s been waiting
to check on me.He stays standing for a moment, then finally lowers himself onto the edge of the
bed, careful not to jostle me.
“Andrei and Raphael will be back in about an hour, he says after a moment, glancing down at his
hands. “They would be here sooner, but Andrei got pulled over for speeding.
“I blink. Oh no. Is he in trouble because of me?The voice whispers in the back of my mind, destroying the happiness I’d felt just mere seconds ago.Stupid little Aurora
Always ruining everything
Can’t even exist without messing up something, can you?
When will you finally learn-
you’re the problem
You’ve always been the problemLeon taps his chin thoughtfully, lips twitching into a small smirk. “Apparently he was doing ninety in a sixty zone. Raphael said the cop looked like he was going to wet himself when Andrei stepped out of the car.
“I let out a breath, eyes downcast. I know what he’s trying to do.Leon leans back slightly, one corner of his mouth lifting again. “He told the guy they were on their way to check on family.

Raphael said he looked terrifying, so the officer just gave him a warning and bolted.
“I small laugh escapes me as Leon’s grin widens.Leon chuckles too, his shoulders relaxing just a bit. Then the room softens again, the silence stretching between us–but not awkwardly. Just… quiet. His gaze finds mine again.
“You really okay?” he asks, quieter now. “I know you said you are, but…”
I look down at the blanket, fingers brushing over the fabric.
“I don’t know,” I whisper honestly. “It still hurts. Alot of it still hurts. But not as much as before. I
think.
“He nods, not pushing, not offering some overblown comfort. Just listening.
“That’s good,” he says simply. “You don’t have to be all the way okay yet. Just… That’s enough.
“I meet his eyes, and for a second I feel that ache again–but this time it doesn’t crush me. It’s
lighter, more like a memory than a wound.Leon looks at me for a long moment, then says, “Just
know that you don’t ever have to explain anything to me, if it’s too hard.
“My heart leaps, and I’m already running–barefoot, small, weightless.
The long grass parts as I sprint through it, legs runing, hair flying behind me as I throw myself into her arms. She catches me with a soft, delighted gasp, spinning me slightly, holding me tight. Her arms wrap around me, and everything feels safe. Warm. Whole. Her cheek presses to mine. She smells like wildflowers.
“My sweet girl.
“I close my eyes and hold her tighter, scared to let go.
I don’t want to let go.
But then the sunlight begins to fade. The warmth slips away.
And her voice begins to echo.
Then distort.
Then disappear.Warmth. Safety. Love.
Gone in an instant.
I blink—and I’m back in my room.My hands tremble as I clutch my chest, like holding it tighter might stop the pieces from falling apart.
I stare at the door, chest rising and falling unevenly, eyes stinging.
The silence that fills the room now feels different heavier. Like something was pulled out of me
and hasn’t quite returned.
That memory–so vivid, so real–it hurts more than anything I’ve felt all day. Not because it was
painful.
But because it was the last time I remembered what love felt like without fear.
