Aurora’s POV
The hallway feels too big and too quiet. My shoes click softly against the tile, echoing like every sound is too loud, like everyone’s eyes are still on me even though the halls are nearly empty. I keep my head down, hugging my books close to my chest. My throat still feels tight, like I swallowed something sharp hours ago and it’s still stuck there.
Then “Aurora.
–
“I flinch, stopping mid–step. Kira’s voice. She’s standing near the lockers, as if waiting for me all along, hands shoved in her pockets, hair falling over her shoulder in that careless way only she can pull off. Her expression is soft when she sees my face.
“You okay?” she asks.
I open my mouth, but nothing comes out at first. My lips part, then close again. I nod too quickly.
“I’m fine. Just tired.
“Her brows pinch, unconvinced. “You don’t look fine. You look like you’re about to break in half.
“I bite my lip, looking down. “…Maybe I am.
“She sighs, stepping closer, lowering her voice like she doesn’t want anyone else to overhear.
“Come on. Let’s go on a walk. Clear your head.
“The suggestion hits me like a weight. I shake my head instantly. “I–I can’t. My brothers… they’re
probably waiting for me to pick me up.
“Kira’s lips press into a thin line, almost like she’s choosing her words carefully. “Aurora, I don’t
think it’d be good for you to see them right now.
“That makes me glance up at her. “What?“She gives me that small, soft smile I’ve always trusted. “I’m worried about you. You’ve been through… a lot today. And they’re… well.. they’re intense.
You’ve already had enough to deal with today. Just… let you do something for you, okay? You don’t
need to rush back to them.
“Something in my chest warms at that. I nod slowly, whispering, “Thank you.
“Kira tilts her head, almost scoffing, a small smile making its way to her face. “You don’t need to thank me. We’re friends, remember?“I small smile make its way onto my face as warmth curls in my stomach.
“Yeah… friends.
“The sky is bruised purple, the air damp with the scent of rain clinging to the grass. We wander

toward the small park across the street, the swings freaking in the breeze. It’s quiet.Peaceful.
The air outside is cool, brushing against my skin life it knows how fragile I feel.
I feel… relieved. We walk side by side along the winding sidewalk, silence stretching between us, until Kira speaks again.
“You know,” she says lightly, “you’re really easy to trick.
“I blink. My steps falter. “…What?” She shrugs, not even looking at me. “I mean you’re easy to persuade. Gullible. That’s why people… you know… pick on you. Or ask you for answers. You don’t put up much of a fight.
“A nervous laugh escapes me, but it doesn’t sound like me.
