Aurora’s POV
Footsteps.Heavy, deliberate. Getting closer.
The sound makes my blood run cold. A big guard tall, broad, with a rifle strapped across his chest–rounds the corner.Nico’s hand shoots out instantly.
“Move,” he mutters.
Before I can let out a sound, he grabs my wrist and Damion’s, dragging us both into the narrow gap
between two stone walls. It’s dark the kind of dark that swallows sound – and I can feel
–
Damion’s shoulder pressed against mine, Nico’s arm blocking us both protectively.
The guard’s boots splash through the puddles, close enough I can hear the leather creak.
Then… silence.
He passes.
I exhale slowly, heart racing.Nico doesn’t move right away. His jaw’s clenched, eyes scanning the courtyard, every muscle wired tight. Then, finally, he exhales and reaches under his shirt, pulling
out a silver chain.
The pendant catches a glint of moonlight with t faint red light.
Damion tilts his head. “That a fashion statement, of—”
“It’s a comm chip you li-,” Nico cuts off as he breathes through his nose, as if resisting the urge to throw Damion at the Russian man.He probably is “It’s an old birthday gift. I can send an audio
signal to his computer. A few words max.
“Damion whistles low. “You Italian boys really like your gadgets.
“Nico ignores him, rubbing his thumb over the small device. A faint blue flicker pulses under his skin, weak and uneven. His frown deepens. “Signal‘ too low.
“L–low?” I stutter, wrapping my arms around me the cold chilling me to the bone.
“We’re practically in a dead zone. I need to be higher, but…”
—
There’s a pause and I already know what he’s thinking before he says it. He can’t climb while guarding us both.
“I can do it,” I blurt out.

Both their heads snap toward me as I fiddle with my fingers nervously, their tips turning a light shade of blue from the droppings temperatures and shattering rain.Nico’s eyes narrow. “Fuck no.
“I can,” I insist, forcing my voice to be a little louder than the whisper it was before. “I’m smaller.
And then you won’t have to worry about us down here alone. I’ll get up high enough to send it.
I swallow hard. “See?” I say, trying not to sound as lustered as I feel. “He believes in me.
“Nico groans under his breath, running a hand through his messy waves. “You two are going to give me gray hair before I even turn 18.
“He stares at me for a long moment his eyes softening, just a little. Then he sighs. “Fine. But if anything feels off, you come down. Immediately.
“I nod fast. “Got it.
“Not a second later, Aurora,” he warns, voice low.

“I will,” I nod, smiling – just barely. He presses the pendant into my palm. It’s cold, lighter than I expected. The metal hums faintly against my skin.
And for the first time in what feels like forever, a little flicker of warmth blooms in my chest.Hope.Real, dangerous, fragile hope.
I look up at the crumbling wall in front of us. Stones slick with rain. Barely climbable impossible.

but not
I take a breath and start moving. My fingers slip again and again, the rain making every stone feel like glass. My arms ache so bad I can barely feel them anymore.
“Come on,” I whisper to myself. “Come on, just-“My boot slides on the next foothold, and my stomach drops as I hold back the scream that threatens to escape. I slam my knee against the wall, biting back yet another yelp as flares through my leg, but I keep climbing.
I shouldn’t have volunteered, not when I’m so messed up. My wrists are nowhere near normal and my own physical state weaker than others: Every grasp at the rocks feels like a war raging in the bones of my wrists.
