The gun clatters to the ground.
And then–she falls.
The bullet hole is small, cruelly clean, right in the center of her chest. Blood seeps fast, pooling beneath her as her eyes glass over, reflecting firelight.
“No…”
My voice is barely there, shaking. “Kira… no, no–crawl toward her, hands shaking so badly I can’t even touch her. My pulse roars in my ears. She’s not moving. Her chest-
It doesn’t rise again.
For a heartbeat, all I can hear is the fire crackling and my own breath breaking apart.
And then the world crashes back in–shouting, footsteps, gunfire.
But I can’t move.
I can’t breathe.
All I can do is stare at Kira’s lifeless eyes as the rain finally starts to fall again–hissing against the flames, highlighting the blood that splatters my face like a cruel art piece.Kira’s blood.

A scream tears out of my chest, but it’s nothing. My voice is tiny, swallowed by the chaos around me. My mind floods with memories I try so hard to bury–the screams of my mother, the cuts, the bruises, the way the world always seemed ready to tear me apart.
And now… this.
I’m her.
I’m everything I’ve ever feared.
The gun clatters beside me. I can barely focus on it. My chest heaves. My vision swims with reds and oranges, the fire reflected in her glassy eyes. I want to close my own, but I can’t look away.
“No… no, no, no…”
I whisper, backing away from her body, shaking. Her lifeless eyes seem to stare right into me, cold and unwavering.
Damion’s voice cuts through the storm of my panic
“Aurora. Hey–look at me.

“You didn’t-“His words falter. “You didn’t mean “I shake my head violently. “I–I shot her! I killed her! I’m a murderer, Damion!” My voice is raw, hysterical, echoing off the walls of the burning compound.
“You” He sighs, running a hand over mine, warning them with his breath, rubbing gently. “You did what you had to. You saved yourself.
