Nora ignored Eleanor and simply instructed the driver to start the car.
Right now, taking the child to the hospital was the only sensible choice.
Eleanor clutched the boy tightly, backing away in panic. “Nora, are you trying to take my son from me? Stay back!”
Nora just stared at her, speechless.
Was Eleanor truly paranoid?
At that moment, Mrs. Cooper and Shirley arrived, and Nora decided not to argue any further.
Mrs. Cooper took one look at the child and immediately ordered the driver to head for the hospital.
Nora followed them inside.
After a quick examination, the doctor asked, “What did the child eat tonight?”
“Mud,” Nora replied. She’d tried to stop him once, but who knew how much he’d eaten before that?
The doctor instructed a nurse to take the boy for further tests.
Sure enough, the child had eaten mud.
It wasn’t digestible, and some of it was stuck in his esophagus, which explained the vomiting.
Thankfully, the amount wasn’t too much. He could be treated at home with medication and observation.
Eleanor gave Nora a grateful look. “Thank you.”
Nora’s response was cold. “Noah ran off into the garden and you didn’t even notice. You didn’t know what he ate, either. Do you even care about him at all?”
Eleanor had no answer.
It was true—she hadn’t been paying attention.
“I know I was wrong,” she admitted, the presence of Mrs. Cooper leaving her no room for excuses.
Mrs. Cooper’s face was tight with disapproval. “Eleanor, you’re his mother. How could you be so careless?”
And to make things worse, she’d tried to blame Nora for her own negligence.
Eleanor could only promise that nothing like this would ever happen again.
Mrs. Cooper didn’t bother to reply; instead, she told the butler to hire a nanny to look after Noah.
Panic flashed across Eleanor’s face. “I’ll take better care of him, I swear! This was just an accident.”
But Mrs. Cooper wouldn’t listen. She left with Nora without another word.
